Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas is hopeful that Alfa Romeo’s updates to the C42 can put the Swiss team “in the game” to score points at this weekend’s Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix.

Bottas is the reigning winner of the Japanese Grand Prix, having taken the chequered flag for Mercedes in 2019, when F1 last raced at the Suzuka circuit, meaning the Finn has fond memories of the track.

“I am happy to go back to Suzuka after three year: the atmosphere is incredible and the fans are passionate and welcoming,” said the 33-year-old.

“Last time we raced here, I won the Grand Prix, having also finished on the podium the year before,” the 10-time race winner added.

Bottas missed out on points in Singapore for the eighth race in a row, but said the car is showing “good pace”, adding: “We’re going to have some upgrades on the car, so hopefully we can pot ourselves in the game and fight for the top ten.”

Bottas’ Chinese team mate Zhou Guanyu will get his first taste of the Suzuka circuit this weekend, the 23-year-old saying: “I am thrilled to race in Suzuka.”

F1 rookie Zhou described the famous track as “iconic” and echoed Bottas’ sentiments on the new parts to the C42.

“If we do our homework for qualifying and place ourselves well on the grid, (the upgrades) may help us get the results we want on Sunday.”

After a strong start to 2022, Alfa Romeo’s form has slumped dramatically, the team scoring just one-point since June’s Canadian Grand Prix.
