A Look Ahead to the First Grand Prix of the 2026 Season

2026 is set to bring in a new era of F1 racing. Apart from the usual round of team and driver changes, this year will introduce revolutionary power splits and aerodynamics. This makes the championship’s first race even more important than usual.

Where and When: The Full Details

The Australian Grand Prix will kick off the new season. It’s to be held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne on March 8. This country has traditionally hosted either the first or last race of the season, with 2026 seeing it return as the season-opener.

Last season, it was also the opening round. Lando Norris took pole position in his McLaren and went on to win the race, followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and George Russell in his Mercedes. This year, the Australian event is followed by the Chinese and Japanese GPs.

Who Are the Early Favorites?

The 2025 F1 season saw Norris win his first championship, ahead of defending champion Verstappen. It’s no surprise to see that both drivers are high on the list of favorites when we look at the odds for this year’s championship, with Norris at +550 and Verstappen at +275. Russell is currently ahead of them at around +225 on some sportsbooks’ lists.

To bet on this and other sporting events, the bet365 details via MileHighSports provide access to a range of bonus offers on different sports. These include a safety net offer and another that gives new users free bets after they make their first deposit and wager. Sports, including football, basketball, and ice hockey, are among the most popular for betting on, while many motorsports wagers are available.

In terms of the constructor’s championship, last year’s champion McLaren is the favorite at the time of writing, with odds of +110. They’re followed by Mercedes at +210 and then Ferrari at +550.

The Importance of a Strong Start

Winning the first Grand Prix of the season doesn’t guarantee a successful year, but the drivers and their teams are well aware that a win in Melbourne would set them up well for the races ahead. This year’s championship includes the Madrid street circuit for the first time, as well as new regulations about the way that energy is to be split almost 50/50 between an internal combustion engine and the vehicle’s electrical components, as confirmed in this BBC report on reactions to the changes.

Any major changes to the regulations and technical specifications add extra tension to the first race of the season. History has shown us that the team that nails the changes at the first time of asking and gets a strong start could prove difficult to catch.

It’s easy to see why F1 fans are eagerly looking forward to the new season. The combination of a battle between several top drivers and the uncertainty of the new rules means that the Australian Grand Prix is already looking like it’s going to be one of the most interesting F1 battles of recent years.
