What F1 Team Is Canadian Owned?

The Aston Martin F1 Team, which is owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, is one team F1 fans from Canada can get behind, as Stroll is the executive chairman of the team, and his son Lance Stroll is partnered by two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso.

The team has had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Alonso on the podium in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, And Australia. The team’s car looks similar to Lewis Hamilton’s title-winning 2019 Mercedes, but the team’s technical director, Andy Green, says they have taken a big risk with it.

History of Canadian-Owned F1 Teams

Canada has a rich history in Formula One racing, with several teams and drivers from the country competing at the highest level of motorsport. Over the years, there have been a few Canadian-owned F1 teams that have made their mark on the sport. Here is a look at two of them:

Team Lotus

Team Lotus was a British racing team that was founded by Canadian businessman, Colin Chapman, in 1952. Although the team was based in the UK, it was owned by Chapman, who was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Under Chapman’s leadership, Team Lotus won seven Constructors’ Championships and six Drivers’ Championships in F1. Some of the most famous drivers to have raced for the team include Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Ayrton Senna.

Team Lotus was known for its innovative designs and engineering, which helped it to dominate F1 during the 1960s and 1970s. However, the team struggled in the 1980s and 1990s, and it eventually went bankrupt in 1994. Despite its struggles in later years, Team Lotus remains one of the most successful and iconic F1 teams of all time.

Jordan Grand Prix

Jordan Grand Prix was an Irish racing team that was founded by Canadian businessman, Eddie Jordan, in 1991. Jordan was born in Dublin, Ireland, but he held Canadian citizenship. Under Jordan’s leadership, the team enjoyed some success in F1, winning four races and finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship in 1999.

Jordan Grand Prix was known for its bold and unorthodox approach to F1, which often saw it punching above its weight against more established teams. The team also gave several young drivers their first chance in F1, including Michael Schumacher, Eddie Irvine, and Rubens Barrichello.

Jordan Grand Prix was eventually sold to the Midland Group in 2005, and it was later renamed Spyker F1 and Force India before becoming Racing Point and then Aston Martin F1.

Aston Martin F1 Team

The Aston Martin F1 Team is a Formula One racing team that is currently owned by Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll. Stroll acquired the team, formerly known as Racing Point, in 2018. The team has undergone several name changes over the years, but it has always been based in the United Kingdom. The team’s headquarters are currently located in Silverstone, England.

The Aston Martin F1 Team made its debut in the 2021 season under its new name. The team’s drivers for the 2021 season were Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel. The team’s car for the 2021 season was the Aston Martin AMR21. The team’s performance in the 2021 season was somewhat disappointing, with the team finishing in seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship.

In addition to owning the Aston Martin F1 Team, Lawrence Stroll is also the executive chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc, a British manufacturer of luxury sports cars.

Impact of Canadian-Owned F1 Teams

Canadian-owned F1 teams have had a significant impact on the sport. Lawrence Stroll’s ownership of the Aston Martin F1 team has brought new energy to the team and has set the goal of becoming world champions. The team’s rebranding as Aston Martin Cognizant has also brought renewed interest in the iconic British carmaker.

Stroll’s investment in the team has allowed for the recruitment of top talent, including the signing of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel for 2021 and 2022. The team’s performance has also improved, with the team finishing fourth in the 2022 Constructor’s Championship. This success has generated excitement among F1 fans and has put the team in a strong position for future success.

Canadian-owned F1 teams have also had an impact on the Canadian motorsport industry. Stroll’s investment in the Aston Martin F1 team has led to the creation of the Aston Martin Performance Centre in Montreal, which offers high-performance driving experiences and driver training. This investment in Canadian motorsport has the potential to inspire future generations of Canadian racers.
