Hello and welcome to F1 News Today with Tillie!

Right, let’s take a look at what’s making news in the world of Formula 1 today…

As the title race heats up, Christian Horner has admitted he loves to wind up his main rival Toto Wolff!

The close battle has led Wolff and Horner to engage in a war of words through the media at times this year — Wolff called Horner a windbag at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix — but Horner insists he is enjoying the personal battle with his opposite number!

Horner told Channel 4…

“Of course this is the first time Mercedes, and the first time Toto has even been in a situation where he has been challenged…

“He’s been in a situation where he came into the team, the drivers were already signed, the engine was already in place!

“He’s done a great job to keep that team winning, but there has been no real competition…

“So this is the first time it’s a true scrap, a true competition!

“And there is a respect I think between the teams, but I think we operate in very different ways…

“I very much want to be on the front line!

“I sit on the pit wall with the strategists and the engineers, Toto will sit in the garage next to the press guy…

“So they are different functions, they are different roles, they are different outlooks…

“But of course, the competition is fierce!

“I think that’s the key thing about this championship…

“We are loving the competition and the more Toto gets wound up, the more fun it becomes!

Well sis, things between these two iconic teams sure are getting spicey!

Speaking of iconic, Mick Schumacher has said he would love to revive the iconic Schumacher Ferrari relationship one day…

Speaking on the ‘In the fast lane’ podcast, Mick said…

“I wouldn’t call it pressure…

“I think it’s nice to be able to call or just say I’m a part of that family!

“To be part of that whole company is great…

“Then obviously, with all the history, where people combine with Ferrari and Schumacher, I think it’s a very special combination and I think hopefully something that can be revived in the future!!”

“Obviously I know what I have to do to prove myself, so they have always been keeping a very close eye on me and helping me in very different ways…”

Well you know, it’s something we would all just love to see!

Speaking of Ferrari, Mattia Binotto was reluctant to put a number on the time gain made by Ferrari with its upgraded Formula 1 power unit, but said it offered “a step” in performance…

Ferrari debuted an upgraded hybrid system for its power unit on Charles Leclerc’s car at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi last weekend…

The updated power unit was understood to be worth less than 10bhp, but Ferrari made clear prior to its introduction that its greater purpose was to help lay the foundations for 2022 and beyond!

After the race, Binotto said…

“I don’t want to quantify it…

“I think that is a fact of our confidentiality!

“It is a step in terms of performance, but as Charles and Laurent Mekies said already, more importantly for us, certainly it has pushed forward as much as we could with that new technology!

“It will certainly help in the view of 2022 in terms of the experience we can do…

“But I’m happy now that Charles has got it and got it for the rest of the season, which still is a step!”

If Ferrari keep making steps, can you imagine a four-team battle for the championship next season?

I’m excited already!

Finally, yesterday we spoke about Nikita Mazepin getting a slap from Michael Masi over his amateur driving in Sochi.

Today Williams driver Nicholas Latifi has come out in defense of the Russian, saying he doesn’t feel his driving crosses the line!

Latifi said…

“He was always moving very late, nothing that was worth me coming on the radio…

“But that’s kind of Nikita’s style, the way he drives!

“It didn’t seem like anything over the limit for me, but he does always leave it until the last minute which isn’t the best, but that’s how he is…”

Well, Latifi may accept it, but I sure don’t!

There is no need to drive like a knob when you’re so far off the pace every week…
