Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff wants to build on the momentum of Silverstone, as he leads the Mercedes team to his home race in Austria, for Round 11 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

Lewis Hamilton finished on the podium at the British Grand Prix, but had threatened to win the race as Ferrari dithered over team orders and Red Bull’s drivers both suffered damage that saw them fall back.

A late safety car scuppered that possibility, but the Silver Arrows have had a car on the podium in all of the last three races.

Wolff admitted that the Spielberg circuit had not always played to the strengths of Mercedes’ car concept in previous years, despite winning on the Red Bull Ring three times with the previous generation of F1 car design.

Only Red Bull themselves have a better record on the circuit, with four victories.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Wolff said: “It’s a very different track to Silverstone and one that hasn’t always suited us in the past, but the cars have changed drastically since we were last in Spielberg.

“We’ll keep our heads down, prepare the best we can and hopefully we can build momentum from Silverstone.”

Mercedes brought some upgrades to the W13, which has been plagued by porpoising and bouncing issues, with smoother circuits such as Silverstone and Barcelona allowing the team to be closer to the lead pace of Ferrari and Red Bull.

Austria demands a car with good stability given the way in which the circuit rises and falls through the hills of Spielberg, while requiring reliable mechanical grip at low speed.

Mercedes, defending Constructors champions, sit third in the current table with 204-points, with drivers George Russell, 111pts, and Lewis Hamilton, 93pts, fifth and sixth in the drivers’ standings respectively.
