Red Bull Happy With Either Driver Winning 2022 Title

These are still early days in the F1 title fight with only seven races of the 22 on the calendar rendered complete, the last race being the famous Monaco Grand Prix. But we’ve already seen an interesting change in the proceedings. So how is that?

Truth be told, while the battle is still pretty much between the iconic Italian stable and the domineering Milton Keynes-outfit, the number of challengers to the 2022 throne, if one could say like that, have increased.

Now how is that?

The 2022 Formula 1 world championship no longer just a two-way fight to the top with Verstappen and Perez dominating the charts. Thanks to his sensational win at Monaco, a first in his career having first raced at the venue back in 2011, the Mexican Sergio Perez has offered a strong fight to the top.

In some ways, it won’t be wrong to call Perez a threatening force even for Max Verstappen, who could only take a third in the last F1 race, concluded just days ago. With Leclerc under pressure and Perez rising to the fore, the F1 world championship, has therefore, opened up somewhat.

Having said the above, the Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has taken the chance to clear the air on the subject of preferential treatment being given to either among Verstappen or Perez where the world title fight is concerned. For where it comes to many, then there are doubts that only Max Verstappen, famously considered the blue-eyed boy of Horner, who carries the majority of Red Bull’s support system.

The general feeling in the F1 world is that the Dutch driver is the one who not only has the skills to capture another world title but also the extensive support of the headlining figures in the Red Bull think tank to go all along.

But here’s what Verstappen’s team boss had to say:

It doesn’t matter to us which of the two is world champion,” he said. “Of course, the constructors’ is enormously important. But whether it’s Max or Checo, they’re both Red Bull drivers, and they’ve both got the same chance. Of course, it’s a long, long season, and it will have its ebbs and flows. But it’s great to have both drivers right at the sharp end.”

But that’s not all that the Red Bull boss added. He would also touch down on the key subject of Checo Perez’s scintillating form this season that saw the Mexican coast to a fine race win at Monaco, the most recent Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The following is what the 48-year-old added, “Checo is in the form of his career, he’s doing a great job. And it’s not a one-off. I mean, we saw his pole position in Jeddah. And he’s really hitting a rich vein of form. So that’s fantastic for us. But we need both drivers working the way they are together. Because Ferrari had the quicker car, certainly in qualifying, whether it was in the races is unknown, but they are massive opponents, and we’ve got to work collectively to make sure that we get both drivers ahead of them.”
