The last time that Formula 1 saw an Australian drive alongside a Frenchman in any team for a full season was back in 2013. Nine years back in the day, it was the famously understated Daniel Ricciardo and Jean Eric Vergne pair saw seen driving for Red Bull’s sister concern Toro Rosso.

Not that it was anything spectacular for STR back in the day, the team scoring only 33 points and landing eighth on the Constructors Standings.

But what seems quite possible is that Formula 1 shall again see a Frenchman race alongside an Aussie in the next or forthcoming season. So how’s that?

It is very likely that Oscar Piastri could drive alongside Esteban Ocon for Alpine (formerly Renault) where it comes to the 2023 F1 season, a championship that has begun to occupy minds of racing fans even as the current season is all but over.

And that’s largely down to the fact that a slew of driving changes are bound to leave the sport stunned and perhaps never really the same as how one finds it in contemporary F1 firmament.

It is quite possible that with the departure of the great double world champion Fernando Alonso, who’ll be Aston Martin bound 2023 onwards, the vacant Alpine team will go to Oscar Piastri.

Piastri is still contractually bound to drive for the Alpine racing team for 2023 should a chance actually arrive. The feeling isn’t some random hunch; it’s something that, as on paper, dictates the young up and coming F1 driver from Melbourne to race for the noted Enstone-based team.

But the dynamics of Formula 1, as per usual, suggest that things might change and pan out differently. And how’s that?

Staring 2023, Sebastian Vettel will no longer be with Aston Martin, the legendary German driver having already made his decision regarding his future. His seat, that until Sunday, i.e., July 31, was up for grabs has been taken by Alonso.

Meanwhile, the seat that Alonso is going to leave behind still has likely takers from the current grid with many suggesting that Daniel Ricciardo, currently driving for McLaren (in a not so super successful stint), will likely get it.

But that’s not all. There’s a growing certainty that in all likelihood Nicholas Latifi may not really be with Williams in 2023 and the seat that he leaves behind might go to some of the other promising drivers from F2. Furthermore, there’s also a possibility that should Ricciardo move out of McLaren, his seat could well go to Piastri.

Meanwhile, the following is what Alpine team boss Mr. Otmar Szafnauer had to say with regards to the Oscar Piastri and Alpine 2023 alliance:

“I’m not privy to whatever pre-arrangements he has with McLaren, if any at all,” Szafnauer said when asked by Autosport about Piastri’s intentions. But I hear the same rumours that you do in the pitlane. But what I do know is that he does have contractual obligations to us. And we do to him. And we’ve been honouring those obligations all year. And those obligations, last through ’23, and possibly in ’24, if some options are taken up.”

Having said that, the team that has technically speaking brought Oscar Piastri so far so close to F1 expects the talented 21-year-old to repay that faith vested in him:

“And our obligations to him this year was to be a reserve driver, to also put him in last year’s car for a significant amount of time. We’re well over half that programme of 5000 kilometres, which isn’t insignificant, in last year’s car, in preparation for a race next year.”
