Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff says it is “hard to predict” where the Silver Arrows performance will be at Round 13 of the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship in Hungary, as expectations haven’t always borne out in reality this season.

The defending Constructors’ champions earnt their first double podium in the last round in France, with Lewis Hamilton second and George Russell third.

“(It’s) a very different circuit; tight, twisty and bumpy, almost the opposite of where we just were,” the Austrian explained.

“We need to keep unlocking more performance, and by maintaining the culture, mindset and spirit that has spurred on all the hard work at the factories,” the 50-year-old added.

The Mercedes W13 has been plagued with aerodynamic “porpoising” and bouncing over much of the season, with the team chasing solutions to catch the leading pair of Red Bull and Ferrari.

Wolff stated that the Brackley-based team would “give it our all” at a circuit where they have had recent successes in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The race also marks the team’s 250th Grand Prix with title partner’s PETRONAS, the partnership synonymous through their eight years at the top in the turbo-hybrid era.

Despite the issues with the W13, Mercedes are third in the Constructors’ Standings, 44-points behind Ferrari, who arguably have the fastest car in 2022.

24-year-old Russell, who has finished in the top five positions in all of his 11 race finishes this season leads seven-time champion Hamilton by 16-points.

Mercedes are the only team yet to have suffered a mechanical retirement during the race, with their only DNF courtesy of the Lap 1 collision at Silverstone, which left Russell side-lined.
