Aston Martin stunned the Formula 1 world on Monday by announcing the signing of double-world champion Fernando Alonso for 2023 on a “multi-year deal”.

Spaniard Alonso, who turned 41 ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, makes the switch from his current team Alpine, replacing Sebastian Vettel, who announced his retirement from F1 at the end of 2022.

Alonso, winner of 32 Grand Prix said: “This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula One today.

“No one in Formula One today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.”

Aston Martin will be the sixth different team Alonso has competed for in F1, having raced for McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Alpine and Minardi, although Renault and Alpine are essentially the same group of people under different branding.

Aston Martin executive CEO Lawrence Stroll explained: “ I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organisation to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.”

Alonso has previously stated his desire to win again in F1, having not won a race for almost a decade, his two titles coming in 2005 and 2006.

The move to Aston Martin appears to contradict the Spaniard’s pursuit of glory, as Alpine are currently fourth in the constructors’ championship, while Aston Martin are ninth.

But Alonso justified his decision by saying: “I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organisation that is committed to learn, develop and succeed.

The passion and desire to perform that I have witnessed convince me to maintain my enjoyment and commitment to the sport. I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that feel right to me.”
