Fernando Alonso says a top seven position at Round 13 of the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship is a “realistic goal” for the Alpine team.

“We showed (in France) that when we can have a clean weekend, to aim for the top seven positions is a very realistic goal for us,” the 40-year-old Spaniard said.

Both Alonso and team mate Esteban Ocon took their maiden wins in Budapest, Alonso winning with the Enstone team when they were guised as Renault in 2003, while Ocon capitalised on a chaotic beginning to the 2021 race to clinch his first F1 victory.

Ocon, 25, said: “I can already feel the all the memories of last year coming back. But that was last year and we need to be focussed as a team to deliver another solid weekend.”

The Alpine pairing both expressed their enjoyment of driving the Hungaroring circuit, with Frenchman Ocon saying: “I like the second sector and how fast and flowing it is. If your set-up is good, that sequence of corners can feel really nice and make you like you’re extracting the maximum from your car.”

Alonso added: “It’s a fun track and a real challenge as a driver, with it’s tight and twisty nature.”

Alpine edged ahead of McLaren in the battle over fourth in the Constructors’ Championship in France, the team’s home event, now holding a slim, four-point advantage over their British rivals.

Alonso has suffered the majority of the teams misfortune with reliability this year, as well as his own misdemeanours on track losing him points, while Ocon’s consistency has seen him outscore his more experienced team mate.
