Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi will leave the Williams Racing F1 Team at the conclusion of the 2022 season when his current contract expires.

Latifi, who has spent three seasons with Williams, has struggled in 2022 with the new generation of cars, having impressed in patches in mid-2021.

Montréal-born Latifi said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Williams Racing – all the people back at the factory and those I work with at trackside – for the last three years.

“Although we haven’t achieved the results together, we hoped we would, it’s still been a fantastic journey. I know none of us will stop putting in every effort until the end of the season.”

Williams CEO and Team Principal Jost Capito praised the Canadian’s “great attitude” towards colleagues and his work, calling Latifi a “great team player”.

With six races remaining in his Williams career, Latifi has achieved a best result of seventh, which came at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, while his only other points finish came at the following race in Spa-Francorchamps, albeit no “racing” laps were completed.

2022 has been a much more difficult year for Latifi, as Williams fell to the bottom of the competitive order, with new teammate Alexander Albon out-shining Latifi by scoring points on three separate occasions.

Perhaps the final straw for Latifi’s hopes of a 2023 seat were delivered at the Italian Grand Prix where Dutchman Nyck De Vries, who beat Latifi to the 2019 F2 title, subbed in for Thai-driver Albon and scored points on his F1 debut.

Williams have already confirmed Albon for “next year and beyond” and stated that their full 2023 driver line-up would be announced “in due course”.
