Is George Russell Soon Going To Be The Main Man At Mercedes?

Not too long after it was widely established and sans much doubt that Sir Lewis Hamilton would in 2024 be racing in his final year at Mercedes, the F1 paddock ran wild with several possible theories about why that happened with one of the widely-discussed themes thereafter being who might be the main man at Mercedes.

Now unless a certain Fernando Alonso goes on to join the Mercedes camp, something that can’t be immediately ruled out, it appears as though the towering force of the future at Mercedes will be George Russell.

Surely, the two leading British drivers driving for a team that is based at Great Britain (Brackley) did form to a reasonable extent a formidable pairing.

Even though it took George Russell just one single season to outpace Sir Lewis Hamilton, very much a seven-time world champion and statistically speaking, the sport’s most successful driver.

As a matter of fact, one of the most undermined facts about George Russell, who once all but won at Sakhir under bright lights is the very fact that in just his maiden season at Mercedes, he outperformed Lewis Hamilton, who’ll soon be Ferrari-bound come 2025 F1 season.

Russell scored a fourth with 275 points in 2022 when he had just arrived at Mercedes, while his more experienced teammate managed a paltry P6 with 240 points. All of which perhaps explains just why is Martin Brundle so optimistic about the young but rising Briton at Mercedes.

“I should think he’d be thinking [‘I’m] pleased,” exclaimed the experienced F1 pundit, one widely noted for his views and the ability to stay clear of biases and wild notions that often surround the F1 paddock.

He would further highlight what might possibly be the inner feeling of George Russell, a talented racer without much doubt, and one whose maiden race win, lest it is forgotten came at one of Hamilton’s favourite F1 track: São Paulo.

Martin Brundle said, “That’s good. I am top man here unquestionably now.”

That told, the following is what Martin Brundle exclaimed when asked by a noted Motorsport publication about the rising relevance of George Russell at Mercedes, something that could possibly see him attain new heights at the prestigious and super successful F1 team:

“George is ready to pick up the mantle at Mercedes Benz, there’s no doubt about it at all, and he’s measured himself against statistically and arguably the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time – that’s a debate we could have all afternoon back to Fangio and Moss – but George has measured himself against Lewis and looks incredibly strong, very equal.  If Mercedes have got a championship winning car this year, who would win? Would it be George or Lewis? I think it’d be really close. So that’s the level that George is at now.”
