F3 Hungary Wrap; Ugochukwu loses championship lead, Slater wins first race & Naël wins the Sprint

• Freddie Slater claimed his first F3 victory of the season in Hungary and took the championship lead for the first time, overturning an eight-point deficit to move eight points clear of Ugo Ugochukwu heading into the summer break.
• Théophile Naël won the Sprint Race, while Tuukka Taponen secured his maiden Formula 3 pole position before recovering to fifth in the Feature after first-lap contact with Slater.
• With just Monza and Madrid remaining, the Formula 3 title fight is finely balanced as Slater and Ugochukwu head into the final two rounds separated by only eight points.

Ugochukwu loses the championship lead

Having led the championship since the opening round in Melbourne, Ugo Ugochukwu was finally dethroned at the top of the standings by title rival Freddie Slater after a difficult Budapest Sprint hampered the American.

A single point separated the championship duo after Spa, where Ugochukwu and Slater even collided. Now, Slater takes an eight-point lead into the summer break, off the back of his first win of the season.

Slater drew level on points with his rival after the Sprint, with a messy race leaving the American down in 17th. A five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on the opening lap, followed by contact with Nicola Lacorte, proved costly.

“Yeah, I think consistency is going to be important. You know, Fred’s been doing that quite well, always putting himself in a good position,” Ugochukwu said after the Feature race.

“So yeah, a few unlucky runs. I have to say Spa kind of compromised the weekend quite a bit. Some issues on Sunday as well there.

“So this weekend has been good to get back into the good scoring positions. But you know, of course, we always want more. So we’re going be pushing for more wins in the last few rounds.”

Taponen stuns Slater for pole

A late stunner from Tuukka Taponen saw the Finn claim his maiden Formula 3 pole position with a 1:33.411, edging Slater and teammate Mattia Colnaghi.

Just 0.042 seconds separated the pair, who later came to blows during the Feature race, leaving Taponen worse off.

While Taponen made a clean start, Slater was eager to take the lead and made contact with the Trident driver at Turn 12. The Briton attempted to dive down the inside of the Finn, leaving Taponen with front-wing damage.

Needing repairs for both the front wing and a right-rear puncture, Taponen had to pit. However, his time loss was minimised after the Safety Car was deployed following an incident involving Maciej Gladysz and Gerrard Xie.

Dropping only to sixth, Taponen recovered another position to finish fifth in the Feature, adding to his top-five finish from Saturday.

Naël victorious in Sprint

Théophile Naël claimed his second win of the season, rising from sixth on the reverse grid in the Budapest Sprint.

Beating Kanato Le, who secured his first podium of the season, while Ernesto Rivera finished third, Naël moved into third at the start.

Xie took the lead from fourth before Turn 1 but lost it at Turn 2 when Jin Nakamura collided with the rear of the DAMS car, collecting Gladysz in the process.

Both Nakamura and Gladysz retired from the race, while Xie had his punctured tyres replaced before rejoining.

Following the Safety Car, Naël made the decisive move for the lead on Lap 9 with a late dive on Le into the first corner.

Drama then befell Ugochukwu, while Slater secured 10th place to score a point and draw level with his title rival.

Slater vs Ugochukwu in the Feature

The enthralling weekend of F3 action peaked during the Feature race, with title rivals Slater and Ugochukwu battling wheel-to-wheel for both the win and the championship lead.

Slater inherited the lead after Taponen was forced to pit with damage from their earlier contact, while Ugochukwu carved his way through the field from sixth.

The Briton escaped any sanction from the stewards, with no further action taken over the incident with Taponen.

By Lap 12, Ugochukwu was right behind Slater and launched his attack. However, their battle was interrupted by a Virtual Safety Car after Le stopped at Turn 12, before a full Safety Car was deployed on Lap 15 following a multi-car incident at Turn 1.

Slater ultimately held on, despite Ugochukwu’s DRS-assisted challenge lasting until the final lap.

Two rounds to go

Only two rounds remain in the 2026 Formula 3 championship, with Monza and Madrid still to come in September.

Speaking after taking the championship lead from Ugochukwu, Slater stressed that the fight is far from over.

“For sure it’s nice, but there’s so many points up for grabs. Madrid is going to be crazy with over 60 points available in one weekend.

“Obviously, it’s a really nice way to go into the summer break but we’ve got some clear things we can work on to make our lives a little bit easier and I want to thank the team for doing an amazing job of pushing super hard, of improving the qualifying pace.

“I think now we need to work a little bit more on our race pace, but the team did an amazing job overnight to improve that.

“So it’s a nice way to go into the summer break and that’s a bit of reset, obviously a bit of time with the family and then get back to it in Monza.”

Just eight points separate the protagonists in their fight for the championship heading into the final two rounds.
