Virtusosi driver Jack Doohan scored his second Sprint Race win of 2022 at the Hungaroring, Round 10 of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, recovering from a poor start to take the top step of the podium.

The Australian, son of motorcycle legend Mick Doohan, controlled his pace and held off any challenge from Jüri Vips’ Hitech GP car.

“The way we managed the Sprint Race from pole, bouncing back from yesterday’s disappointing result, it felt like more than a Sprint Race win,” the 19-year-old said.

Starting from reverse-grid pole position, Doohan had lost the lead to second placed Enzo Fittipaldi, who outstarted the Australian in his Charouz Racing System car.

But the Brazilian, grandson of double F1 world champion Emerson, made a mistake at turn 2 on Lap 1, locking up and going wide, allowing Doohan to snatch a lead he would never relinquish.

Doohan had to manage a safety car restart in the early laps, after a collision involving championship leader Felipe Drugovich, had left PREMA’s Dennis Hauger stranded.

Drugovich was on the inside as everyone attempted to make their way around the first corner, but a slide from the Brazilian saw him bump championship rival Logan Sargeant into Hauger, with Sargeant damaging his wing and retiring from the race.

The ensuing melee caused another title challenger, Théo Pourchaire, to take avoiding action and tumble down the order but the Frenchman failed to recover back to the points.

As a result, Drugovich, who went on to finish fourth, extends his championship lead by five-points to 44, over Pourchaire.

DAMS driver Ayumu Iwasa, who finished the Sprint Race in eighth place, starts Sunday’s Feature Race on pole position ahead of Hitech GP’s Marcus Armstrong, with the race starting at 11:35 CEST.
