Adrian Newey Keeps Aston Martin Guessing as Key 2026 Design Call Goes Down to the Wire

Adrian Newey’s first Aston Martin Formula 1 car is already being shaped by the hallmarks of his career-defining approach, with a key technical decision reportedly delayed until the very last moment ahead of the 2026 season.

The legendary designer joined Aston Martin in September 2024 after leaving Red Bull, where he masterminded eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles.

Add to that his title-winning work with Williams and McLaren, and Newey remains the only designer in F1 history to secure teams’ championships with three different outfits. Now, operating from Aston Martin’s cutting-edge Silverstone campus, he is aiming to make it four.

The sweeping regulation reset for 2026 has handed Newey a rare clean-sheet opportunity, raising hopes that Aston Martin could re-emerge as a genuine title contender and potentially put Fernando Alonso back in the championship conversation.

But the scale of the changes, spanning both aerodynamics and power units, has left even the most experienced figures navigating uncharted territory.

One area that has reportedly demanded particular attention is the suspension concept. Reports suggest, Newey and his engineering group deliberately postponed the final choice of suspension layout until as late as possible, underlining the uncertainty surrounding the optimal design path under the new rules. Which solution Aston Martin ultimately selected remains unclear.

As a result, it would “not be surprising” if the team arrives at the opening round in Australia without a fully optimised package. However, that approach could offer long-term benefits, leaving scope for significant development gains as the new era unfolds and the competitive picture becomes clearer.
