La Formula 1 ha smesso di utilizzare i motori V10 per ridurre i costi, limitare le velocità e aumentare la rilevanza per i produttori in merito alle tecnologie applicabili alle auto stradali. Il cambiamento regolamentare del 2006 ha imposto il passaggio ai motori V8 da 2,4 litri, una mossa motivata sia dalla necessità di contenere le spese sia dalla spinta verso propulsori ibridi più efficienti e un impatto ambientale ridotto.
