Hamilton vs. Leclerc: The Battle For Ferrari’s Number 1 Spot In 2025

Lewis Hamilton, having activated his exit clause at Mercedes last season, signed for Ferrari for the 2025 and 2026 seasons and will be one of the team’s most experienced drivers to date. The spotlight is on Ferrari now as the 2025 Formula 1 pre-season tests are approaching. Ferrari’s other driver, Charles Leclerc, although still young, has gathered quite a following and proved himself to be on par with the likes of Max Verstappen on a number of occasions. The team’s dynamic pairing raises questions about who will emerge as the team’s number one driver. 

The Promising Line Ups for 2025 

The 2025 season driver pairings look extremely promising and are set to deliver interesting dynamics within each team. Max Verstappen must take on a much younger and hungrier Liam Lawson. Lando Norris will have to fight Oscar Piastri again if he wishes to retain his number 1 at Mclaren. However, fans are most excited about the new Hamilton-Leclerc pairing at Ferrari. After a storied career with Mercedes, where he won six of his seven world championships, Hamilton now embarks on a new chapter at Ferrari. However, at 40 years old, he faces the challenge of competing against a much younger teammate  Leclerc, who is often regarded as one of the fastest qualifiers in F1. Leclerc will be more than happy to take on one of the best drivers of all time and prove to himself and others that he deserves the top spot at Ferrari. Let’s see how these two might compare based on their histories and previous duels. 

Comparing the Ferrari Duo

Charles Leclerc, now in his sixth season with Ferrari, has demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience. In 2024, he finished third in the championship standings, almost catching Norris, who had a far more competitive car throughout that season. His performance included wins at iconic circuits like Monaco and Monza, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor. 

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, is coming from a relatively poor run in the last two years at Mercedes. With the constant issues such as porpoising, tire warming, and straight-line speed, it is safe to say that most of Hamilton’s hold-ups were not due to his driving. Even with an inferior Mercedes of the last 2-3 seasons, Hamilton still managed to win a couple of races, namely Silverstone and SPA last season. Let’s compare these two with 3 different sections: qualifying, race pace, and car set-ups.

Qualifying  

As mentioned above, Leclerc is considered by many as one of the fastest qualifiers in F1 history. Leclerc currently has 26 pole positions. However, in F1, the pole position, while important, does not immediately guarantee an easy race win. Lecler’s pole conversion to win ratio is not the greatest. He only has 5 wins from pole position. 

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, has a whooping number of 104 pole positions and a conversion rate of over 50%, having won 61 races from pole position.

It is true that in the last couple of seasons, Hamilton had overall poor qualifying results, the problems at Mercedes in terms of the car setup have often been cited as the reason for this. Hamilton’s experience and resilience should not be underestimated when looking at the qualifying duel between these two, even though currently Leclerc looks to be faster. 

Race pace

The race pace between these two will likely be very close. This time, they will both be driving the same car, and it will mostly be down to them to set it up properly, test it, and find the best strategy together with the team for each race weekend. 

While Leclerc has shown immense speed when it comes to race pace in the past, he has also made a number of mistakes during races which caused DNFs or poor placement. Hamilton has still been incredibly consistent even while driving the now-inferior Mercedes.

In past races where both of these drivers found themselves close to each other or directly fighting each other, such as in the famous Monza 2019 race or 2021 Silverstone, wherein both of these cases Hamilton was the one chasing down Lecrerc, fans were able to watch a thrilling duel that kept everyone at the edge of their seats.  

Car setup – Driving style

Car setup will be important in determining who comes on top in 2025 between these two. We could say that Leclerc has a “home-field advantage,” considering he has been with Ferrari for the last 6 years. Hamilton will likely need to put in a bit more effort to adapt to the new team and new car as fast as possible. 

Hamilton’s driving style is characterized by his ability to adapt to changing conditions on the track. He is unmatched when it comes to saving tires for the long run. Leclerc usually has aggressive setups, but both drivers prefer highly precise front ends. If Hamilton adapts quickly, Leclerc will have a fight on his hands early on. 

Exciting Duel Ahead

With the momentum from last season and his deep understanding of Ferrari’s operations, Leclerc enters 2025 with confidence and determination. Hamilton will do everything to adapt as soon as possible and take fight for the win in each race if possible and chase down his dream of becoming an 8-time world champion and beating all records.

F1 fans are eagerly anticipating this clash of titans, with many considering Hamilton and Leclerc as one of the most exciting driver pairings for 2025.
