‘I Know It’s Very Close’: Kimi Antonelli Stays Focused as F1 Title Opportunity Looms
Italian F1 star Kimi Antonelli is getting closer to his first Formula 1 world championship, but the young Mercedes driver is determined to keep his attention on the track rather than the title celebrations. Following his third-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix on October 11, the Italian has opened up a 102-point lead over teammate George Russell in the drivers’ standings.
Consequently, he could clinch the championship as early as the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. However, Antonelli knows that his performance will ultimately determine when he achieves that goal.
Antonelli Keeps His Focus on Performance
Speaking after the Singapore race, Antonelli admitted he was “close” to winning the championship.
“I know it’s very close, I know it’s there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can,” he said.
His comments show that although the title is within reach, he does not want the growing excitement to distract him from his work. Rather than concentrating on the points he needs, the 20-year-old wants to maintain the same approach that has helped him lead the championship throughout the season.
Moreover, Antonelli was honest about his performance in Singapore. Despite securing another podium finish, he felt that he could have driven better during the weekend.
As he explained, his goal remains to win and perform at his best. He also acknowledged that achieving that result depends on doing his job properly. With that in mind, his priority heading into Austin is to reset, prepare thoroughly and make the most of his next opportunity.
Historic Title Opportunity Awaits in Austin
The United States Grand Prix, scheduled for October 23–25, could become a defining moment in Antonelli’s career. His third-place finish in Singapore, combined with Russell’s ninth-place result, increased his championship lead to 102 points.
With six rounds remaining after Singapore, including Austin, Antonelli could mathematically clinch the championship at the next event. To secure the title in Austin, he would need to leave the race with a lead of at least 125 points over his nearest rival, assuming the championship calendar remains unchanged.
If he succeeds, Antonelli will become the youngest Formula 1 world champion and the first Italian driver to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Nevertheless, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has remained cautious, recognizing that unexpected results can still change the championship picture. Racing incidents, retirements and the performance of rival drivers could all affect the outcome.
For now, Antonelli is keeping his ambitions in perspective. Although a historic achievement could be just one race away, he understands that consistent performances matter more than predictions. His focus on preparation and execution will be crucial as he approaches the biggest opportunity of his young career.
