F1 Standings 2021: Season Summary
The 2021 Formula 1 season was one of the most exciting seasons in recent history, with a thrilling battle for the championship between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The season began in March with the Bahrain Grand Prix, and it quickly became clear that Verstappen and Hamilton were the two drivers to watch.
Throughout the season, Verstappen and Hamilton engaged in a fierce battle for the championship, trading wins and podium finishes at nearly every race. Verstappen got off to a strong start, winning the first two races of the season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Hamilton fought back, winning the next two races in Australia and China.
As the season progressed, Verstappen and Hamilton continued to dominate, with Verstappen winning races in Spain, France, and Austria, and Hamilton winning races in Monaco, Great Britain, and Hungary. The two drivers were neck-and-neck in the championship standings, with Verstappen holding a slim lead over Hamilton heading into the second half of the season.
The second half of the season saw Verstappen and Hamilton continue to battle it out, with Verstappen winning races in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Mexico, and Hamilton winning races in Italy, Russia, and the United States. The championship battle came down to the wire, with Verstappen holding a 6-point lead over Hamilton heading into the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a tense and dramatic affair, with Verstappen and Hamilton starting the race on the front row of the grid. Verstappen got off to a strong start, taking the lead, before hamilton was able to pull away to what looked to be a race win, and with it, another championship. However, a late safety car period bunched up the field and set up a dramatic finish.
On the restart, Verstappen and Hamilton went wheel-to-wheel, with Verstappen ultimately emerging victorious and securing his first Formula 1 championship. The win was a historic moment for Verstappen and for Red Bull, who had not won a championship since 2013.
While the battle for the championship was the main focus of the season, there were plenty of other notable performances from drivers and teams throughout the year. McLaren’s Lando Norris had a breakout season, securing multiple podium finishes and finishing fourth in the championship standings. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also had a strong season, finishing fifth in the standings and securing multiple podium finishes.
