General Motors (GM) and its luxury brand Cadillac have reached an agreement in principle with Formula 1 (F1) to join the grid as the 11th team in 2026. This landmark deal marks a significant milestone for both the American automaker and the sport, as GM becomes the first U.S. manufacturer to enter F1 as a works team in recent history.

With analysis from Leon Bet, let’s examine the twists and turns GM took on its winding road to joining the F1 grid…

How much did GM pay to enter F1?

GM’s entry into Formula 1 comes after extensive negotiations and a substantial financial commitment. In partnership with TWG Global, a motorsports ownership group, GM agreed to pay an anti-dilution fee of $450 million – more than double the standard $200 million entry fee. This significant investment demonstrates GM’s dedication to competing at the highest level of motorsport.

Initially, GM will rely on Ferrari engines for their F1 power units. However, the automaker plans to develop its own engines by the end of the decade, further cementing its position as a serious contender in the sport. To support their F1 endeavors, GM will leverage Andretti Global’s existing resources in the United States and Silverstone, England, with racing legend Mario Andretti serving on the team’s board.

Reaction from Key Stakeholders

The announcement of GM and Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 has been met with enthusiasm from key figures within the sport. Greg Maffei, President and CEO of Liberty Media, expressed his belief that welcoming an impressive U.S. brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid could bring additional value and interest to F1, saying “With Formula 1’s continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport.

“We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1. We are excited to move forward with the application process for the GM/Cadillac team to enter the Championship in 2026.”

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, echoed Maffei’s sentiments, adding “General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport. We look forward to seeing the progress and growth of this application, certain of the full collaboration and support of all the parties involved.”

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1, offered his full support for the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM, and the team to reach this agreement.

“General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners. I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application to bring a GM/Cadillac branded team on the grid for the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship. All parties, including the FIA, will continue to work together to ensure the process progresses smoothly,” said the FIA supremo.

GM’s Vision for Formula 1

For General Motors, entering Formula 1 represents an opportunity to showcase their engineering expertise and technology leadership on a global stage.

Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, described F1 as the pinnacle of motorsports, demanding boundary-pushing innovation and excellence, saying “As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world. This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.”

The Road Ahead

As GM and Cadillac prepare to join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement within the motorsports community. The addition of an American manufacturer as a works team is expected to bring fresh perspectives, innovative technology, and increased competition to the sport.

In the coming years, GM will focus on building a strong foundation for their F1 entry, leveraging the expertise of Andretti Global and developing their own power units. The collaboration between GM, Cadillac, and their partners will be crucial in ensuring a successful debut and long-term presence in the sport.

Formula 1 fans worldwide can look forward to witnessing the iconic Cadillac brand battling it out on the track against established giants like Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull. The increased American presence on the grid is also expected to further boost F1’s popularity in the United States, opening up new opportunities for the sport’s growth and development.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, all eyes will be on General Motors and Cadillac as they embark on this exciting new chapter in their automotive history. Their entry into Formula 1 promises to bring fresh energy, intense competition, and a new era of American innovation to the world’s premier motorsport series.
