McLaren have announced that Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo is to leave the team in a “mutually agreed” deal.

McLaren have been linked with FIA Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri, who is currently the reserve at Alpine.

32-year-old Ricciardo said: “It’s been a privilege to be a part of the McLaren Racing family for the last two seasons but following several months of discussions with Zak & Andreas we have decided to terminate my contract with the team early and agree to mutually part ways at the end of this season.”

Ricciardo, who joined McLaren in 2021 from Renault, which became Alpine in 2021, has underperformed alongside British team mate Lando Norris.

But Perth-born Ricciardo did score a memorable victory at the Italian Grand Prix last year, McLaren’s first since 2012.

McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl said: I would like to thank Daniel for his dedication and contribution over the last two seasons so far. Despite the shared challenges, he has always turned up with a fighting spirit and positivity and helped the entire team to always keep pushing forward.”

Ricciardo has yet to announce his future plans as yet, while McLaren state that their driver line-up for 2023 will be confirmed “in due course”.
