Perhaps it won’t be wrong to say that a great leveller in life is that you’re far too young when faced with some of the hardest battles. That doesn’t happen with all; the greatest challenges are reserved for just a few.
And what makes this even more interesting is that at 20, Kimi Antonelli is at the precipice of his career, where he can either be the youngest world champion in Formula 1 or emerge as the second-best in perhaps the best team out there in terms of resources, talent and team management.
A sensational record
He already holds the record for the most number of race wins aged just 19. While Max Verstappen had just 1 race win to his name at the age of 19, the young Italian had already won 6 by that time.
At 20, he’s the man currently leading the drivers’ world championship fight. That’s on a grid that has names like Fernando Alonso, Sir Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. His stats are startling and command awe: in that of the thirty-six race starts, just thirty-six, lest we forget, the Bologna-born has amassed 13 podium-finishing drives.
And yet, his greatest challenge could yet be the one he’s about to encounter in what lies ahead.
The youngest driver ever to set a fastest lap, the youngest to take pole and the youngest to score a Formula 1 hat trick, Kimi Antonelli is about to enter his home Grand Prix in what’s up next.
Morose narratives and superstitions be damned, the Italian driver will have, at least at some stage, heard about the thing called the home GP curse. As seen earlier this year, Fernando Alonso failed to finish his home Grand Prix in Spain. The same has happened in the past to Charles Leclerc.
Furthermore, more recently one saw how Max Verstappen, a legend of the grid, crashed out of his home race at the Zandvoort-bound Dutch Grand Prix of 2026.
But it’s not what happened to the others on the grid, each of them being Antonelli’s worthy opponents, that will concern the Mercedes driver.
A home track record he’d do well to forget
It’s the very fact that he’s not had that much luck when it comes to racing in Italy that could be playing on his mind.
In 2025, he crashed out at the Imola race. He had got his schoolmates to come watch him race. A sordid figure cut loose in the end with not too many words, understandably so.
Even before that, despite starting the race from sixth on the grid at Monza, Kimi Antonelli finished with a P9. It would be a Max Verstappen-dominated event with McLaren playing second fiddle.
This time around, all eyes are transfixed on what could happen on September 6, 2026, at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
So much to look forward to at Monza
Ferrari’s home track, the fastest racing venue on the calendar, and a track where the likes of Verstappen and Hamilton hunted the rest of the pack akin to pugnacious-looking sharks. It’s all of that.
But could it be the dreamy venue where the home boy runs wild with a flags-to-pole victory? Can he do it? There’s little doubt about a fairly young character who’s taken the mickey out of the rest of the grid featuring far too experienced names.
But what are the chances of another Kimi Antonelli win, who’s won 2 of the last 6 F1 races and will certainly form a great narrative in what’s to come?
