Toto Wolff Talks About Mercedes Succession Plan

Mercedes team principal and CEO Toto Wolff has revealed that he is evaluating a succession plan when he retires from his role. The Austrian executive explained that his responsibilities could eventually be divided between two or three people as he looks to establish a strong management structure for the team’s future.

“For me, it’s important to do what’s best for the family and to do what’s best for the team,” Wolff told the Cheeky Pint podcast when asked about Mercedes’ succession plans [1:09:20].

“And that means looking at the structure going forward, where this team can live without me. Probably it’s not going to be the same because I have the credibility as an entrepreneur that’s leading my own businesses.

“But there will be a solid management structure, and I believe that my job is going to be divided between two or three people that I’m vetting at the moment”

Wolff joined the Mercedes F1 team in 2013. Under his leadership, the team has transformed into a dominant powerhouse. Since he took the helm as team principal, Mercedes has won eight consecutive constructors’ titles (2014 to 2021) and seven consecutive drivers’ championships (2014 to 2020).

Toto Wolff believes the United Kingdom outfit can maintain a successful structure by distributing his current responsibilities among multiple individuals.

“I believe are already doing a great job with all of their strengths in various areas. It’s going to be different, but it will be a successful team,” Wolff said.

Wolff is in his final year of contract, but no fixed date has been set for his full departure from the role.

The Mercedes boss is on the brink of equaling former McLaren boss Ron Dennis’ record of 17 combined F1 world championships. The team currently holds 15 combined titles.

If Kimi Antonelli clinches his maiden driver title in either the United States or Mexico and Mercedes simultaneously secures the constructors’ title, Wolff will equal Dennis’s record.

Antonelli has an opportunity to become the youngest F1 world champion in Austin this weekend. To achieve this, he must win the race, while his teammate Russell must finish ninth or lower and Hamilton must finish 5th or lower.
