“He’s on a Discovery Mission” – Toto Wolff Reveals Kimi Antonelli’s Unusual Mindset on the Verge of Championship Glory
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has praised Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable mindset as the young sensation moves closer to the 2026 Formula 1 title following his victory at COTA. Speaking to the media, Wolff revealed that Antonelli had visited his office before the race and made it clear that he was not thinking about the championship. Instead, the Italian said he wants to enjoy the moment.
“Yeah, what a boy, you know,” Wolff told Motorsports.com. “I was just saying, before, I got a question whether he was nervous before the race, and I said no; he just sneaked into my office before getting ready and said, ‘I am just going to enjoy this right now. And it’s weird; I’m not thinking about the championship at all, isn’t that funny?‘
“So he’s on a discovery mission there also in terms of what’s happening to him emotionally, and then, you know, he just delivered from the beginning to the end; it was exceptional at any time.”

Kimi Antonelli is now on the verge of becoming Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion. He just needs two more points to secure his title at next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez to create history.
Kimi Antonelli Makes His Feelings Known After Victory at COTA

Despite lacking early pace in the practice sessions in Austin, Antonelli started the race from pole on medium tires and executed a flawless one-stop strategy to win the United States GP. He crossed the finish line 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The occasion marked his ninth victory of the season.
“What an incredible feeling,” Antonelli told Formula1.com. “After Friday, I don’t think any of us expected to be standing here with the win, so to turn the weekend around like this is really special.
“The car felt great today, and I was able to control the race, but it definitely wasn’t easy. There was pressure throughout, and I knew I couldn’t afford to make a mistake. I just tried to stay calm, focus on each lap and execute the race.”
The Championship Fight Is All but a Formality After COTA

Lewis Hamilton’s fourth-place finish and George Russell’s eighth-place finish kept their title hopes alive, albeit only mathematically.
Kimi Antonelli now holds a commanding 123-point lead over teammate Russell in the driver’s standings. He needs only two points in Mexico to seal the title, no matter what his rivals do.
After his third-place finish in Austin, four-time world champion Max Verstappen has also been knocked out of the title fight. This is a first for the Dutchman since the 2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, when he was no longer in title contention with five races to go in a season.

The 2026 Mexican Grand Prix will take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit from October 31 to November 2.
