FIA Overturns Pierre Gasly Penalty as Alpine Wins Monaco Grand Prix Review
- Pierre Gasly has been restored to third place in the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine successfully overturned the pit-lane speeding penalties that had dropped him to seventh.
- The FIA rescinded the penalties after Formula 1 Management admitted the timing system used to calculate pit-lane speeds was inaccurate and had overestimated Gasly’s speed.
- The revised result demotes Isack Hadjar from the podium and could open the door for other penalised drivers, including George Russell and Oscar Piastri, to challenge their own Monaco penalties.
In a sensational turn of events, Pierre Gasly has been reinstated to the podium of the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine successfully challenged the pit-lane speeding penalties that had cost him third place.
The Frenchman, who initially finished third in Monaco, had been relegated to seventh after receiving two five-second time penalties for exceeding the 60km/h pit-lane speed limit by 0.1km/h and 0.4km/h respectively.
However, new substantial and relevant evidence emerged when Alpine lodged a Right of Review with the FIA, with Formula 1 Management admitting to an error that affected the calculation used to determine pit-lane speeds.
The FIA found there was: “a significant delta in the distance used to calculate the speed and distance which could be driven…and which appears to have been driven”.
“[FOM’s] provided evidence that the distance used in calculating the F1 Official Timing (and hence the pit lane speed) was inaccurate and overestimated the speed of Car 10 (Gasly),” read the official FIA decision document confirming the reinstatement of third place.
Alpine issued its own statement following the decision “we welcome the decision made by the FIA to deem our right of review as admissible following the final classification of last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.
“As a result, the Stewards have rescinded the two five-second penalties imposed on Car #10, which reinstates the team’s third place finish.
“We would like to thank the FIA and Formula One Management for its transparency and co-operation throughout the Right of Review process and for reaching this decision.
“The team’s focus is now very much on this weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and striving for the best possible result with both of its cars.”
It remains unclear whether other affected drivers, including George Russell, will seek reviews of their own penalties. Oscar Piastri could also have grounds for a challenge, having potentially lost a podium finish due to the same pit-lane timing discrepancy.
Isack Hadjar, who had inherited third place following Gasly’s penalty, is now relegated back to fourth in the final Monaco classification. Piastri drops to fifth, while both Racing Bulls drivers each fall one position as a result of the revised standings.
