Piastri Controls Qatar Sprint as Norris Moves Within Reach of First World Title

Oscar Piastri won the Qatar Grand Prix sprint for McLaren, finishing ahead of George Russell. Lando Norris took third after holding off Max Verstappen. The nineteen lap sprint on the twisty Losail circuit hinged on the opening run to Turn 1. Piastri protected his pole position from Russell and Norris, while Fernando Alonso dropped from fourth as Yuki Tsunoda and Max Verstappen both moved past.

Tsunoda left space on the inside soon after, which allowed Verstappen to move into fourth as he began to pursue Norris. Verstappen reported repeated bouncing and jumping issues, the same problems that had affected him in qualifying. He could not close on Norris because the dirty air on the narrow Losail layout created separation between cars. The absence of pitstops further locked the field into the order established on the opening lap.

Alonso provided the main exception. He ran wide at the exit of the final corner on lap twelve, which allowed Andrea Kimi Antonelli to pass into Turn 1 and take sixth place for Mercedes. Antonelli appeared set to inherit fifth because Tsunoda received a five second track limits penalty. A late track limits penalty for Antonelli reversed that likely change. Alonso finished seventh and Carlos Sainz took the final point in eighth for Williams, holding off Isack Hadjar and Alex Albon.

Charles Leclerc fell from ninth to thirteenth early in the run. Lewis Hamilton, who started from the pitlane along with three other drivers, remained in seventeenth.

Norris now leads Piastri by twenty two points after the sprint. Verstappen sits twenty five points behind. A victory for Norris in the grand prix on Sunday would secure his first world title.
