Liam Lawson, the rising star from New Zealand, is set to compete for Red Bull Racing in the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Early Career

Born on 11 February 2002 in Hastings, New Zealand, Lawson began his racing career in karting at the age of seven. He quickly demonstrated his talent, winning two karting titles in 2014. Lawson transitioned to single-seater racing in 2015, competing in the Formula First Manfeild Winter Series and the New Zealand Formula First Championship.

In 2016, Lawson dominated the New Zealand F1600 Championship Series, claiming 14 out of 15 victories and becoming the youngest champion in the series’ history. He then progressed to the Australian F4 Championship in 2017, finishing second in his rookie season.

Rise Through the Ranks

Lawson continued his upward trajectory in 2018, competing in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship with Van Amersfoort Racing. He secured three wins and three pole positions, ultimately finishing runner-up to Lirim Zendeli.

The following year, Lawson joined M2 Competition for the Toyota Racing Series, where he claimed five wins and clinched the championship title after a season-long battle with fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong. He also competed in the Euroformula Open Championship, finishing second overall and winning the rookie title.

Road to Formula 1

In 2020, Lawson made his FIA Formula 3 Championship debut with Hitech Grand Prix. He showcased his skill and determination, securing three wins and six podiums en route to a fifth-place finish in the championship.

Lawson graduated to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2021, once again racing for Hitech Grand Prix. Despite facing challenges, he managed to secure a victory and several podium finishes, ultimately placing ninth in the standings.

Alongside his Formula 2 commitments, Lawson also competed in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) in 2021 for Red Bull AF Corse. In a controversial season finale, he finished runner-up to Maximilian Götz.

Red Bull and AlphaTauri Ties

Lawson’s potential caught the attention of Red Bull, and he joined their prestigious Red Bull Junior Team in 2019. This association led to opportunities within the Red Bull F1 family.

In 2022, Lawson took on the role of test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri. This experience provided him with valuable insight into the workings of a Formula 1 team and allowed him to further develop his skills.

Breakthrough in Formula 1

Lawson made his Formula 1 debut in 2023, replacing an injured Daniel Ricciardo at Scuderia AlphaTauri for five Grands Prix. He seized the opportunity, scoring his first points finish in Singapore.

His performances impressed the Red Bull hierarchy, and Lawson was promoted to a full-time race seat with Racing Bulls for the 2024 season, replacing Ricciardo from the United States Grand Prix onwards.

After a strong showing with Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson has been given the opportunity of a lifetime – a seat with Red Bull Racing for the 2025 Formula 1 season. He will partner with reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, forming a formidable lineup for the team.
