Guess the driver who emerged the fastest in the final or last free practice session in 2024 at Monza just ahead of the big qualifying?
It wasn’t the driver who is hailed as the boy who’ll bring glory to Ferrari in the course of the future. It is not the driver either who’s fondly addressed by some, if not all, as the sport’s smooth operator. Nor was it Lando Norris and not even Max Verstappen. The sport may not begin or end with him, but some of its most definitive peaks have been authored by a certain Lewis Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton, soon to be a Ferrari driver, will be seen perhaps giving a hard fight to his Ferrari opponents of 2024: both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., the latter who much like the Briton is Williams bound from the onset of 2025.
What Lewis Hamilton’s dominance in FP3 has shown is that he is still very much that passionate driver who is keen to demonstrate quickness at 39. Not even drivers several years younger than him and unarguably in much faster machines than Hamilton’s Mercedes were able to better the 2020 World Champion, these being both McLaren youngsters.
Interestingly, in another year’s time, he would have something common with former McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso.
And it’s that the Stevenage-born mega world champion will in a few months time, come January 2025, the only other current F1 driver on the grid (besides Alonso) to be contesting in his forties.
Though, what’s the benefit of life with vagueness of numbers? Sure, age is an important facet in F1 as most teams would like to contend with young F1 drivers who have time, age and reflexes on their side.
But not everyone can perform or is performing at the level of Sir Lewis Hamilton, who despite not contesting with the fastest race car in the 2024 season actually has, if you think about it, the same number of race wins as Lando Norris.
What will help Hamilton during qualifying for Monza, which gets underway shortly, is that he has the experience of having battled here for no fewer than 17 previous occasions. Seventeen is the number.
So as Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, mega racing talent, multiple world championship winner, the greatest from Great Britain to have taken to the sport (is there even a doubt), takes to Monza for qualifying for the 2024 contest, all eyes, including that of Ferrari, will be on the man.
Needless to even doubt as it will be Hamilton today in a Mercedes, whose prowess and form can give a first-hand reference as to how he might be at the very venue one year later, albeit having switched from Black racing overalls to red in a year’s time.
And that, in itself, would be a massively-exciting proposition, say something akin to a Tifosi running into a dashing red looking Ferrari speedster on a day where things might not have been the happiest for him up until the red-coloured serendipity!
