Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Race Report: Hamilton Wins in Red

Lewis Hamilton won the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix to claim his first victory for Scuderia Ferrari, producing a three-stop drive in 53°C track temperatures at the Circuit de Barcelona-CatalunyaGeorge Russell finished second for Mercedes and Lando Norris completed the podium for McLaren. The result is Hamilton’s 106th career victory, Ferrari’s 249th in Formula 1, and makes him the 41st driver to win a Grand Prix for the Maranello team. It came at the same circuit where Michael Schumacher claimed his first victory in red thirty years earlier.

Hamilton started from the front row on used Soft tyres and held second place behind pole-sitter Russell through the opening lap. Charles Leclerc, who lined up tenth on new Medium tyres, made immediate progress through the field, climbing to seventh by the end of lap one. Russell’s pace on Medium tyres in the opening stint was strong enough that nobody behind could close on him, but Ferrari had other plans.

Hamilton made his first pit stop on lap 11 for Hard tyres, well ahead of the recommended strategic window. The early switch maximised the undercut effect and forced rivals to respond. He returned to the pits on lap 27 for Medium tyres, maintaining strong pace through the middle of the race while the two-stop runners around him managed increasingly worn rubber.

The moment that decided the race came on lap 40, when Fernando Alonso stopped on track and triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Hamilton pitted for his final set of Hard tyres on lap 41, making the stop at effectively half the usual time cost while retaining the lead ahead of the two Mercedes cars. With 25 laps remaining on fresher rubber than anyone around him, Hamilton set a pace that nobody could match.

Three Stops and the Team Behind the Victory

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur said the win capped a turbulent stretch for the team and praised Hamilton’s control of the race from the first lap. “This is a very good day for the whole team, for Lewis and for all the guys at the factory who are pushing flat-out all the time,” Vasseur said. “This result is the best way to thank them. The past year and a half has been quite difficult, with plenty of ups and downs, so to win today is a huge push for us. It is a strong start to the European part of the season. Before this, we had two consecutive podium finishes in Canada and Monaco and now we can add the win, having had a strong enough pace to fight for pole yesterday.”

Vasseur pointed to tyre management as the foundation of the result and the three-stop approach as a calculated risk the team could afford. “From lap 1, we knew tyre management would be the key and in that respect Lewis did a fantastic job all race long,” he said. “He was in control of the situation, pushing when we asked him to. Our strategy was aggressive but that is what you can afford to do when you have the pace for the win. Charles was unlucky as he had to retire a few laps from the end but I’m sure he will be fighting for victories together with Lewis in the coming races. We start over again in Austria in a fortnight’s time, approaching the weekend in the same way we did here, keeping in mind that we were not nowhere two weeks ago and we are not world champions today.”

Compounds, Degradation, and the Strategic Chess Match

With thermal degradation a defining factor across the 66-lap race, strategies ranged from two to four stops, with all three compounds widely used. Nine drivers ran each of the three compounds during the Grand Prix. Russell and Norris both relied on a two-stop approach, starting on Mediums and switching to Hards for their final two stints, while Hamilton was the only front-runner to use all three compounds.

Pirelli Motorsport Director Dario Marrafuschi described the race as a strategic chess match driven by the conditions. “The Barcelona Grand Prix was one of the most interesting races since the start of the season, particularly with regard to tyre usage,” he said. “Tyres played a central role: aided by pronounced degradation, due to the high temperatures and the choice of softer compounds compared to 2025, they became the key pieces in an intense game of chess, highlighting both the drivers’ skills and the teams’ strategic capabilities.”

Marrafuschi highlighted Ferrari’s decision to split strategies between their two drivers as the winning move. “The two-stop strategy proved very effective in terms of race pace, but the real winning move was the insight shown by some teams in opting directly for three pit stops on Sunday,” he said. “Scuderia Ferrari, for example, chose to differentiate the strategies between its two drivers. Leclerc, starting from tenth position, pitted twice, while the decision to stop Lewis Hamilton three times delivered the Briton his first victory in red.”

The early first stop was central to the plan. “By significantly anticipating the first stop compared to the recommended windows, the team maximised the undercut, forcing their rivals to respond on the same strategy,” Marrafuschi said. “It was an option that Ferrari had likely already identified from the outset as the most competitive for Hamilton. The advantage was then managed all the way to the chequered flag, also thanks to the time gained during a Virtual Safety Car.”

Tyre behaviour held consistent with Friday’s practice data throughout the race. “No significant changes were observed in tyre behaviour compared to Friday’s second free practice session,” he said. “Tyre management and track evolution helped to slightly reduce degradation in the final stints, as did the use of both sets of Hard tyres retained by some teams.”

Of the three compounds, the Medium proved the strongest over race distance. “The Medium was probably the most effective compound over race distance, offering an excellent balance between grip and degradation,” Marrafuschi said. “The two Ferrari drivers demonstrated this in the third stint by adopting different strategies: before his retirement, Leclerc was unable to match his team-mate’s pace.”

Even the Soft found its place despite its rapid wear rate. “All three compounds selected for the weekend were nonetheless used in the race,” he said. “Even the Soft, despite its rapid performance drop-off, found a place in strategies, both at the start and in the closing stages, with mixed results.”

A Childhood Dream Fulfilled in Red

Hamilton’s Barcelona victory gives Ferrari their sixth podium finish in seven races this season, and the aerodynamic upgrades the team brought to Montmelo played a direct role in the performance advantage that made the three-stop strategy possible.

Hamilton described the win as the achievement of a lifelong ambition. “This is an incredibly special moment,” he said. “Winning my first race with Ferrari is something I’ve dreamt about since I was a child, and to finally achieve it feels incredible. There were moments last year when this moment felt almost impossible, but I’m so grateful to Fred for believing in me and everyone there for making me feel so at home. We’ve been working so hard all year and so many things have changed over the past months, and today is the result of all that effort.”

He praised the team’s execution across every aspect of the weekend. “I’m so proud of everyone, both here at the track and back in Maranello,” Hamilton said. “The upgrades we brought this weekend performed exactly as we hoped, the car felt great, and the team executed everything perfectly. The pitstops were fantastic and every detail was handled brilliantly.”

Hamilton finished by acknowledging the support of Ferrari’s global fanbase. “I’ve been fortunate enough to experience many special moments in my career, but this one is different,” he said. “Ferrari has the greatest fans in the world and seeing their passion, their energy and their support makes this victory even more meaningful. This is a day I’ll never forget, and I hope it’s the first of many wins that we can celebrate together.”

Late Retirements and the Championship Standings

Leclerc’s retirement was a painful end to what had been an aggressive and effective recovery drive. The Monegasque started tenth and quickly worked his way into the top six, running a pace competitive enough to secure a strong points finish. With four laps remaining, a hydraulic issue forced him to stop, costing Ferrari what would have been a double-points result.

Kimi Antonelli’s retirement from second place compounded a difficult afternoon for Mercedes. The championship leader was running behind Hamilton when a reliability issue ended his race in the closing stages, echoing Russell’s mechanical failure at the Canadian Grand Prix weeks earlier.

Antonelli spoke about the lost opportunity with measured frustration. “It is very disappointing to retire from P2, but these things can happen in racing,” he said. “George suffered an issue in Canada and now it’s happened to me; we know our reliability is something we need to work on and I am sure the team will be pushing incredibly hard to improve that. It’s more important points that we’ve lost but we must remember that it is the first year of these new regulations and we are all learning quickly.”

He offered praise to Hamilton before turning his attention to the next race. “Congratulations to Lewis (Hamilton) on his victory today,” Antonelli said. “He is a great driver and has been so much help in my career so far. I am pleased to see him up there once again as he really deserves it. I think we had the pace today to challenge him for the win, but the Virtual Safety Car came out at a bad time for us, and we didn’t get to see how things would have played out. We have one week without racing before returning in Austria. We have seen our competitors take a step forward here this weekend and we will need to raise our game there if we want to fight for victory again. We will pick ourselves up, learn from this weekend, and come back stronger.”

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff congratulated Hamilton while confronting his own team’s reliability problem head-on. “Congratulations to Lewis (Hamilton),” he said. “It has been a while since his last victory, and he has worked incredibly hard to earn the top spot again. We always say that if it can’t be one of our two drivers then we hope it is him. Despite the Virtual Safety Car helping him at the final stop, he drove a great race and is a fully deserving winner. I am also happy for Fred (Vasseur). Being the Team Principal of Ferrari is not easy, and I am pleased for him as my friend.”

Wolff was direct about the cost of another mechanical failure. “It is disappointing that we’ve suffered another reliability issue that has cost us a lot of points today,” he said. “We know that we will need to improve this if we are to fight for both World Championships. It was George who suffered in Canada and today it is Kimi. We know that to finish first, first you have to finish, and we will be working flat out to make sure we improve our reliability.”

He reflected on how the race might have played out without the retirements and the VSC. “Today could certainly have played out differently,” Wolff said. “George’s pace in the opening stint was superb and no-one behind could touch him. He wasn’t as quick on the Hard tyre though and we were kept honest throughout by both Lewis and Lando (Norris). We have seen today just how competitive the field is, and we will not have this season our own way. We will need to redouble our efforts and come back stronger in Austria.”

In the championship standings, Antonelli retains the lead with 156 points despite his retirement. Hamilton’s victory closes the gap to 41 points, moving him to 115 and second in the standings. Russell sits third on 106 points, fifty behind the leader. Formula 1 returns to action on 28 June at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.
