Lawson Laughs Off Supercars Talk: “I Didn’t Even Know I Was Racing!”
Liam Lawson has put to bed any speculation that he will be dipping his toes into the Supercars Championship, shutting down rumours of a potential cameo during the current New Zealand rounds by saying: “I didn’t even know I was racing!”
Specialist Supercars media had strongly reported in the lead-up to last week’s Taupō Super440 round that the Kiwi was a shoo-in for a wildcard entry with one of the existing teams.
However, Lawson himself appeared blindsided by the speculation, as the 24-year-old awaits Formula 1’s return to racing in Miami from May 1–3.
“I landed in New Zealand and my phone was blowing up with like, ‘Oh, Liam you’re racing Supercars next week’,” Lawson said.
“And I was like, I didn’t even know I was racing Supercars next week!
“So, I don’t really know how everybody else seems to know that I’m racing a Supercar next week.
“But, yeah, it was a very cool idea. It’s obviously a series that I’ve grown up watching and I would love to do it at some point for sure.”
The enforced April break in Formula 1—due to the cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix—has seen drivers such as Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll take part in GT3 racing endeavours.
Supercars is currently in Lawson’s homeland for a landmark double-header, having raced on the North Island in Taupō before shifting to Christchurch on the South Island for its maiden event at Ruapuna.
“Obviously when my life is not so focused on one thing, maybe. And I can actually put the time in to prepare for it. It would be cool.
“But yeah, obviously no real truth to that one.”

Lawson has long had an affinity for the Australian touring car championship, having driven the Blanchard Racing Team’s Ford Mustang at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in 2024, as well as one of Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Chevrolet Camaros at the picturesque Highlands Motorsport Park.
“I think the series is amazing. I think they do such a good job to keep the cars raw,” Lawson continued.
“You know they still have obviously V8s, naturally aspirated. They have sequential gearboxes, which they’re not going away from.
“They’re not going towards paddle shifts and other things. So three pedals, there’s no auto-blip and stuff like that.
“It’s something I would love to do. I’ve driven the car a couple of times and just had a blast.”
After three rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Lawson sits tenth in the standings, ahead of rookie teammate Arvid Lindblad. A standout seventh-place finish in China was backed up by further points with ninth in Japan.
