The Grand Prix itself runs at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, roughly 30km from central Abu Dhabi and considerably closer again to Zayed International Airport, and the short hop between the two cities is one of the reasons the Abu Dhabi weekend doubles as a mini tour of both.

Measuring The Distance

From central Dubai, Yas Marina Circuit sits approximately 113-114km away by road. From Abu Dhabi’s city centre, the same circuit is roughly 30km, a 20 to 25 minute drive rather than the hour-plus needed from Dubai. Anyone staying in Abu Dhabi itself has a noticeably shorter trip than those based in Dubai for the weekend.

Typical Journey Times

By car, the Dubai-to-Yas Marina drive typically takes 70 to 90 minutes in free-flowing traffic, and up to two hours isn’t unusual once race-day congestion builds up around Yas Island itself. Public buses take longer, generally 1.5 to 2 hours point to point, longer again once a local transfer to the circuit is factored in. Taxis and ride-hailing services run a direct route in a similar window to driving yourself, typically 1 to 1.5 hours outside peak periods. For those wanting to skip the road entirely, a Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi helicopter transfer is available through operators such as Falcon Aviation, cutting the journey to around 35 minutes.

Getting From Dubai To Abu Dhabi

Renting a car offers the most flexibility for a multi-day trip. International visitors need a valid driving licence and passport to rent in the UAE, and the major international rental brands all operate out of Dubai’s airports and city locations.

Taxis provide a direct, door-to-door option. A licensed taxi from Dubai to Yas Marina Circuit typically costs somewhere in the region of AED 250 to 350 depending on the exact pickup point and traffic, and it’s worth confirming the fare, or ensuring the meter is running, before setting off.

Public buses connect the two cities on fixed routes. The E100, E101 and E102 services link Dubai’s Ibn Battuta and Al Ghubaiba bus stations with Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, each costing around AED 25 one-way, with total journey times ranging from roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to just under 2 hours depending on the specific route and stops. None of these buses run to Yas Island directly, so a local connection from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station is still needed to finish the trip.

Navigating Within Abu Dhabi

From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, local routes including buses 190 and 184 connect toward Yas Island, depending on where in the city the journey starts; a local taxi or the race-weekend shuttle services covered below are generally the more straightforward option for the final leg. During the Grand Prix itself, free shuttle buses also run from central pickup points, including Yas Mall, directly to the circuit.

Taxis are readily available throughout Abu Dhabi and can be hailed on the street, booked through ride-hailing apps, or arranged through hotels. Drivers heading to Yas Marina Circuit by their own car will find extensive parking on-site, with staff and signage directing traffic to the appropriate area on race days.

Airports And Air Travel

Dubai International Airport remains the busier hub for international arrivals, offering a wider range of direct flights but a longer transfer, roughly 124km (77 miles) and around 1 hour 15 minutes by road to Yas Marina Circuit.

Zayed International Airport, Abu Dhabi’s main gateway, sits far closer to the action. Since opening its new Terminal A in February 2024, the renamed airport is only around 10km, roughly a 15 minute drive, from Yas Marina Circuit, making it a genuinely practical choice for race attendees who don’t need Dubai’s wider flight network. Both airports offer full modern facilities: duty-free shopping, dining, premium lounges, and on-site car rental and taxi services to start the onward journey.

By Road: Taxis And Buses In Detail

Taxis remain the most direct option from Dubai, with the roughly 1 hour 30 minute journey covered above running through licensed operators with metered, air-conditioned vehicles. Fares in the AED 250 to 350 range are typical, though it’s sensible to check with the driver or app before departing, especially during the surge in demand around race weekend itself.

The E100 bus is the main scheduled service between the two cities, with tickets costing around AED 25 each way and journey times a little under two hours depending on the exact route. It’s the most budget-friendly option by some distance, but factoring in the wait for a connecting local bus or taxi onward to Yas Island, it’s also the slowest, and best suited to travellers without heavy luggage or a tight schedule.

Yas Island And Vicinity

Yas Marina Circuit sits at the centre of an island that has grown considerably as an entertainment destination in its own right. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, next door to the circuit, remains home to high-speed rides and Ferrari-branded attractions, while Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi offers an indoor theme park built around DC and Looney Tunes characters. Yas Waterworld adds more than 40 water rides and slides, and Yas Beach gives visitors a stretch of sand to unwind on between sessions.

SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, opened in May 2023 and has since become one of the island’s headline additions, home to marine-life exhibits and rides that weren’t part of the Yas Island lineup in earlier years. Yas Mall, one of the larger shopping centres in Abu Dhabi, rounds out the island’s offering with retail and dining options and also doubles as a key pickup point for circuit shuttles during the Grand Prix.

Accommodation Options

The signature hotel on Yas Island is the one that physically straddles the circuit: opened as The Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi and later renamed Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, it has operated since 2017 as W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island, its twin towers linked by a bridge that crosses the track itself, with its LED-lit facade still one of the most recognisable sights on the calendar.

A separate cluster of IHG-branded properties collectively marketed as Yas Plaza Hotels, Crowne Plaza Yas Island, Yas Plaza Circuit and Yas Plaza Marina, sits within walking distance of the circuit and major island attractions. Rotana operates its own separate options nearby, including Yas Island Rotana and the more budget-conscious Centro Yas Island by Rotana, and Park Inn by Radisson also has a property on the island for those looking to spend less on a room and more on tickets.

Event-Specific Transportation

During the Grand Prix weekend, two dedicated shuttle services run for ticket holders. The Circuit Circular Shuttle serves all the main grandstands and entertainment zones inside the venue itself, while the Yas Courtesy Shuttle connects hotels and pickup points around the island, including Yas Mall, directly to the circuit, both typically running at frequent intervals across the Thursday-through-Sunday race weekend.

Parking Solutions

Yas Marina Circuit has extensive on-site parking for those driving themselves, with staff and signage directing traffic on race days. Yas Mall also offers complimentary parking paired with a direct shuttle to the circuit, a popular option for those wanting to avoid the immediate circuit traffic, while paid parking closer to the venue, at Yas Plaza, typically runs around AED 200 a day during the event.

What’s Coming: A Light Rail Link

Longer term, getting between Zayed International Airport and Yas Island is set to get considerably easier. Abu Dhabi’s transport authority has confirmed a light rail project directly connecting the airport with Yas Island destinations, including the theme parks and circuit area, with construction due to begin in 2026 and service targeted for 2030. It’s years away from carrying any race-weekend traffic, but it signals how much more connected the island is set to become for future Grands Prix.

Planning Your Visit

However it’s covered, the roughly 113-114km between Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is straightforward to plan around. Driving offers the most flexibility at around 70 to 90 minutes outside peak traffic; taxis cover the same ground with less hassle at a higher price; the E100 bus is the cheapest option but the slowest once the local connection to Yas Island is added; and flying directly into Zayed International Airport cuts the final leg to little more than 10km. Whichever route gets chosen, booking accommodation early is worth it, hotels on Yas Island and in Abu Dhabi fill up fast during race week, and building in extra time for the final approach to the circuit on race day itself is always a good idea given how much traffic converges on Yas Island at once.
