Fernando Alonso Extends Aston Martin Stay Through 2027 Alongside Lance Stroll in Unchanged Line-Up

The Line-Up Nobody Had to Change

Aston Martin have confirmed what much of the paddock already suspected. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have both signed new long-term contracts with the team, extending a partnership that will now stretch into a fifth consecutive season together in 2027.

Stroll’s continuation had rarely been in doubt, with the Canadian entering a ninth season alongside the team his family has built from the ground up. Alonso’s situation carried more uncertainty given Aston Martin’s difficult form this year, but the two-time world champion has closed the door on any talk of a move elsewhere.

Committing for the Long Haul

Between them, Alonso and Stroll will carry 644 race starts into 2027, forming the most experienced pairing on the grid. Alonso, born in 1981, remains the oldest driver in the field and has now spent three separate decades racing in Formula 1, a career that includes back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 and 32 Grand Prix wins. He joined Aston Martin in 2023.

Alonso said the decision took time to reach, but that his motivation for racing has not faded.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,” he said.

He pointed to what the team is assembling off the track as a reason to stay invested for the long term.

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.”

Alonso also credited the pull the sport still holds for him, pointing to the fans who follow him around the calendar.

“I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”

Stroll Points to Progress at Silverstone

Stroll, who has raced for the team under Lawrence Stroll’s ownership from the start of the Aston Martin era, described the progress being made at the Silverstone factory as the reason behind his own extension.

“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term. I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team,” Stroll said.

He singled out the mood inside the factory walls as a motivating factor heading into the next phase of the project.

“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me.”

“I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”

A Vote of Confidence From the Top

The timing of the announcement stands out. It arrives ahead of this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with Aston Martin sitting 10th in the Teams’ Championship. Rather than use a quiet run of results to reconsider the line-up, the team has opted for continuity heading into a new regulation cycle.

Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll cast the extensions as recognition of what both drivers offer beyond outright pace.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team,” he said.

“Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.”

“We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives.”

Four Seats Still Up for Grabs

With Alonso and Stroll locked in, attention turns to the handful of seats still open across the 2027 grid. Four remain unresolved. Haas are expected to confirm Oliver Bearman for another season, with F2 championship leader Rafael Camara the frontrunner to partner him. Racing Bulls are expected to retain Arvid Lindblad for a second year, while Liam Lawson is hoping to secure a full campaign of his own, though the team could still choose to promote Nikola Tsolov, currently second in the F2 standings.

Against that backdrop of unresolved seats elsewhere, Aston Martin’s own situation stands out as settled. Two drivers, 644 combined starts, and a fifth season together already locked in before most of the grid’s other questions have been answered.
