F1 Just Published Its Half-Year Numbers. Here Are The Ones It Didn’t

Eleven rounds into 2026, the numbers say the sport’s strategic instincts are out of date. The undercut is succeeding at 86 percent, far above its 2022-2025 average. Seventy-nine driver-races have been completed on a single pit stop. The hard tyre has worn out faster than the medium at five of eleven circuits, upending the hierarchy every strategy model was built on.

This is F1 Chronicle’s half-season data review: every figure below is our own analysis of official F1 timing data, dry sessions only, caution laps excluded, with sample sizes disclosed throughout…

  • The undercut has succeeded in 43 of 50 close pit battles in 2026, an 86.0 percent success rate against the 2022-2025 era’s 68.7 percent (n=725).
  • Seventy-nine driver-races have been completed on one-stop strategies across seven circuits, including eighteen at Suzuka and sixteen at Miami.
  • The hard compound has degraded faster than the medium at five of the eleven circuits measured, continuing the inversion of the traditional tyre hierarchy.
  • Monaco swept the endurance records: the longest clean stint on all three compounds, the cheapest pit stop of the season and the biggest single undercut gain.
  • The fastest verified launch of 2026 belongs to Charles Leclerc at Spa: 0-100 km/h in 2.79 seconds.
  • Pit lane time loss is running within about a second of the era baseline at most circuits, so the strategy revolution is coming from the tyres, not the pit crews.

What Changed In F1 Tyre Degradation In 2026?

The single biggest strategic fact of 2026 is that the compounds no longer behave the way the pre-2026 rulebook of thumb says they should. Across the eleven circuits measured so far, the hard tyre has degraded faster than the medium at five: Melbourne, Spa, Miami, Silverstone and Montreal. At Melbourne the gap was the widest of the season, with the hard losing 0.067 seconds per lap while the medium effectively held station. The traditional model, in which softer means faster but shorter and harder means slower but longer, has held cleanly at the other six, with Shanghai the most old-fashioned circuit of the year: its medium degraded six times faster than its hard.

The stint records tell the same story from the other direction. The longest clean stints of the season all came at Monaco, where Esteban Ocon ran 47 laps on hards, Arvid Lindblad 53 on mediums and Fernando Alonso 53 on softs, the last of those on the compound that is nominally the most fragile of the three. Max Verstappen’s Hungary drive sits in the same family: 29 laps on softs measured at just 0.038 seconds per lap of degradation across the 19 clean laps our standing exclusions kept, roughly half the rate the season’s hard tyres have averaged, in a car that was on balance the fourth fastest that weekend. One circuit is running against the whole trend. Barcelona produced the heaviest degradation of the season on every compound, its softs losing 0.247 seconds per lap against an era average of 0.113, and it is the only circuit where 2026 deg is dramatically worse than the historical record rather than similar or better. Whatever the combination of surface, heat and layout is doing there, it is doing it to everyone.

Two measured slopes this season came out marginally negative, the Melbourne medium and the Montreal soft, which on a fuel-corrected median simply means degradation too small for the method to distinguish from zero, not tyres improving with age. They are reported as measured and treated as flat.

How Often Does The Undercut Work In 2026?

Across rounds 1-11, our standing definition found 50 close-combat pit battles in dry conditions with clean caution-free windows for both cars, and the car that stopped first won 43 of them. That is an 86.0 percent success rate against the 2022-2025 era’s 68.7 percent from 725 measured instances, and while a half-season sample of 50 is far too small to declare a permanent seventeen-point shift, it is running well above every full season in the undercut database this comparison is built on. Twenty-eight further candidate battles were rejected because a safety car, virtual safety car or the Monaco red flag touched the measurement window, which is the boring methodological work that keeps the 50 honest.

The circuit-level table behaves as the era data predicted where samples exist. Hungary delivered 5 undercuts from 7 battles against its 75.0 percent era rate, the prediction-validation we published in the Hungarian Grand Prix deep dive. Barcelona and Austria, the two biggest 2026 samples at 19 and 12 instances, both ran hotter than their era baselines. The biggest single gain of the season belongs to George Russell, who undercut Isack Hadjar at Monaco for 8.841 seconds, a cycle measured thirty-five laps before that race’s red flag and untouched by it.

The mechanism behind the season-long drift is the degradation picture above: an undercut works when fresh rubber is dramatically faster than worn rubber, and a season of unpredictable compound behaviour keeps handing the aggressor exactly that mismatch.

How Much Time Does An F1 Pit Stop Cost In 2026?

Pit lane economics are the stable half of the strategy equation. At seven of the ten circuits with 2026 stops measured, the median time loss for a racing-speed stop sits within a second of the 2022-2025 era figure: Miami is the season’s cheapest pit lane at 19.74 seconds, Hungary came in at 22.04 against an era 21.39, and the full circuit table in the pit stop time loss data carries every delta. The cheapest single visit of the season was Russell’s 14.08 seconds at Monaco; the dearest was Esteban Ocon’s 49.85 seconds in China.

Two circuits sit outside the pattern and both carry small samples: Melbourne ran 4.0 seconds over its era figure from nine measured stops, and Shanghai ran 10.1 seconds over from just six, a median dragged by that Ocon stop among others. With samples that thin the honest reading is that something made those particular stops expensive, not that those pit lanes have structurally changed, and the second half of the season will settle which it was.

The strategic conclusion is the useful part: the pit lane toll has not moved, so 2026’s one-stop epidemic and undercut boom are being driven almost entirely by what the tyres are doing, not by cheaper stops.

How Fast Do 2026 F1 Cars Launch?

The standing-start dataset now covers nine dry rounds, and it comes with an honesty note. Backfilling the early season exposed a telemetry alignment problem at several rounds, where lap-one data begins after the car has already started moving, and 23 of the 45 individual launch measurements failed our sanity checks for exactly that kind of reason. Those readings stay visible in the dataset and are excluded from every claim below; we would rather publish 22 verified launches than 45 mixed ones.

From the clean readings, the fastest launch of 2026 so far is Charles Leclerc’s at Spa: 0-100 km/h in 2.79 seconds, at the head of a Belgian Grand Prix front group that all launched between 2.79 and 3.04. Hungary’s top five covered the same sprint in 2.97 to 3.09 seconds, measurably slower off a different grid surface, and Barcelona’s clean set ran 3.07 to 3.28. Every one of those launches happens on combustion power alone below 50 km/h, the clutch doing all of the work before the electrical system is permitted to join in, and the spread between circuits is becoming its own finding: same cars, same rule, different tarmac, measurably different launches.

Do F1 Drivers Go Faster In Races Than In Qualifying?

Less than the headline numbers suggest, which is the methodology story of our season. Session-wide race maxima still beat qualifying maxima almost everywhere, but measured per driver, each against their own qualifying best, the median gain runs from 26 km/h at Silverstone down to 7.5 at Budapest, and at Monaco and Spa the median driver was actually slightly slower in the race. The extremes belong to Franco Colapinto, 43 km/h faster at Silverstone in a slipstream, and Valtteri Bottas, 20 km/h slower at Spielberg. The giant race-day speed records are set by a handful of cars in strong tows, stacked with the Manual Override Mode that becomes available in exactly that situation, and we corrected two of our own articles this month when the per-driver measurement showed our original interpretation gave deployment credit that mostly belonged to slipstreams.

What Were The 2026 Half-Season Records?

The superlatives board, every entry from verified clean data: longest clean stint, Alonso’s 53 laps on softs at Monaco; biggest undercut gain, Russell on Hadjar at Monaco, 8.841 seconds; cheapest pit visit, Russell at Monaco, 14.08 seconds; dearest, Ocon in China, 49.85; fastest launch, Leclerc at Spa, 2.79 seconds to 100 km/h; biggest race-over-qualifying speed gap, Colapinto at Silverstone, 43 km/h; and the caution census reads six safety car rounds, seven virtual safety car rounds and a single red flag all season, at Monaco.

That is one circuit’s name appearing in four of the seven records. Monaco, the race everyone calls a procession, was quietly the season’s strategy laboratory: the lowest hard-tyre degradation of the year, stints that ran half the race distance, the cheapest stop and the biggest undercut of the season. The procession is where the strategists had the most room to work.

What Should You Watch In The Second Half Of 2026?

Three live questions. Whether the undercut rate holds anywhere near 86 percent as the sample grows toward era size. Whether the hard-medium inversion spreads past five circuits or the traditional hierarchy claws some back. And whether the one-stop keeps paying at circuits where the era data says it cannot. The degradation tables, the undercut ledger and the launch dataset all keep building, round by round, and wherever the measurements disagree with something we have published, the correction will be public, the way it was this month.
