Colton Herta a Threat to Cadillac’s Future Formula 1 Driver Line-Up

Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon has acknowledged that Colton Herta’s progress in Formula 2 and potential acquisition of a Super License could create a difficult decision regarding the team’s driver line-up beyond 2026.

Cadillac has confirmed Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as its experienced drivers for the 2026 debut season. Herta, transitioning from IndyCar to Formula 2, is pursuing the necessary Super License points to qualify for Formula 1. Should he succeed, he would be eligible for a race seat with Cadillac, possibly influencing driver choices for 2027.

Respect for Herta’s Approach and Potential

Lowdon praised Herta’s commitment and awareness of the challenges in Formula 2, describing it as the mark of a true racing driver.

“There is a lot of talent in Formula 2, and Colton understands that,” Lowdon said. “We want him to succeed and gain experience. This is an ideal scenario where he could be knocking on our door in the future.”

Lowdon emphasized that earning a Super License does not guarantee a seat.

“There is no automatic arrangement. Driver selection will always be based on merit.”

Testing and FP1 Opportunities

Cadillac recently completed a test with a 2023 Ferrari car at Imola, with Sergio Perez driving. Lowdon indicated that Herta is unlikely to receive similar testing opportunities next year due to regulatory restrictions.

“We have not explored previous car testing for Colton because we do not have a previous car,” Lowdon explained. “FP1 sessions are planned, and as a rookie driver, Colton is a prime candidate for those.”

He also acknowledged Ferrari’s support in providing testing days this year, describing the partnership as valuable but not something Cadillac can rely on regularly.

Outlook

Lowdon expressed eagerness to see Herta adapt to Formula 2 machinery and circuits, highlighting the learning curve involved. The team will continue to assess driver performance and make decisions based on merit as they prepare for Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1.
