Formula 3, the breeding ground for future Formula 1 talents, continues to be a hotbed of young and aspiring drivers showcasing their skills on the international stage. As the pre season testing comes to an end and the 2024 season unfolds, the racing world anticipates a new wave of talents poised to make a significant impact. In this in-depth exploration, we shine a spotlight on 5 Formula 3 drivers to watch in 2024.

5 Formula 3 drivers to watch in 2024

Luke Browning – Hitech

Luke Browning continued his fine form over the three days of pre-season testing in Sakhir as the Hitech Pulse-Eight driver topped the timesheets on the final morning of running at the Bahrain International Circuit.

After running on the opening day in Bahrain was limited due to rain, the Briton was pleased to get back into a rhythm with Hitech, and managed to top the charts on both days 2 and 3.

2024 will be Browning’s third year in the Hitech fold, having achieved the GB3 Championship title with them in 2022. Earning his promotion to F3 in 2023, the Briton went on to score one podium finish in the Barcelona Sprint Race on his way to 15th in the Standings, alongside storming to a lights-to-flag victory in the Macau Grand Prix last month.

Dino Beganovic – PREMA

Dino Beganovic ended this week’s Sakhir pre-season test in fine form as he posted the fastest time in the afternoon session on the final day. The PREMA Racing is hopeful that it will translate into a strong title challenge.

The Ferrari Driver Academy member returns for a second campaign in Formula 3 with PREMA. He comes back as the highest-placed driver from last season’s Championship, having finished sixth thanks to his four podiums.

The partnership between Beganovic and PREMA is a longstanding one, with the 19-year-old having first raced for the team back in 2020 when he claimed P3 in Italian F4.

He continued with PREMA in 2020 and 2021, moving up to the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, achieving a P13 finish before winning the series in ’21, taking four victories and a further 10 podiums along the way. In 2023, the Ferrari Academy junior scored four podium finishes in F3 and a further six top 10 finishes.

Noel León – Van Amersfoort Racing

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Noel León secured top spot with a time of 1:46.657, with Campos Racing’s Oliver Goethe just a fraction off his pace.

The only rookie in the Van Amersfoort Racing 2024 lineup, Noel León arrives fresh from winning the Euroformula Open Championship last season and hopes to carry that momentum into his maiden Formula 3 campaign. The Mexican driver has found success in every category he’s raced in so far, with three single seater titles on his impressive resumé.

With so many rookies joining the F3 grid this season, early consistency could be a huge factor in determining who makes a running start and who trips up in the beginning.

Tim Tramnitz – MP Motorsport

Tim Tramnitz makes the step-up to Formula 3 following an impressive 2023 effort. The German driver finished third in the Formula Regional European Championship behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli and fellow F3 rookie Martinius Stenshorne, after scoring three wins and 10 podiums in total.

A member of the Red Bull junior team, Tramnitz also competed in three races in the Euroformula Open Championship last year, ending up on the podium in each one.

Prior to that, he caught the eye in 2021 when he finished as the runner-up to Oliver Bearman in the ADAC F4 Championship, achieving nine podiums over the course of the season which included five victories.

Max Esterson – Jenzer

Max Esterson returns to the Championship for a full campaign with the Swiss team. Last year, the American driver got to make his debut part-way through the season with Rodin Carlin, appearing for the team at the Silverstone and Budapest rounds.

Of course, joining halfway through a season is hardly ideal preparation for a debut, but Esterson was part of the Jenzer lineup across all three of the post-season tests last year, completing plenty of mileage between Imola, Jerez and Barcelona.

The prior experience in F3 will count for a little bit, but Esterson will hope to hit the ground running having had experience of the Formula 3 car and tyres which could count in his favour even more at the beginning of the season especially with so many rookies getting their first taste of F3 action.

The Dynamics of the 2024 Formula 3 Season

As these five drivers embark on their respective journeys in the 2024 Formula 3 season, several dynamics will shape the narrative of this highly competitive championship. The interplay of talent, team strategies, and adaptability to the evolving dynamics of each race will determine who emerges as the frontrunners in the quest for the championship title.

Team Dynamics and Support Systems

The role of the team cannot be understated in Formula 3, where young drivers are not only honing their skills but also adapting to the intricacies of racecraft. Each of the mentioned drivers is aligned with a team renowned for its commitment to developing talents. Teams like Prema Racing, Trident Racing, Iron Lynx Racing, ART Grand Prix, and Hitech Grand Prix provide a conducive environment for these drivers to thrive.

The support systems within these teams, including experienced engineers, race strategists, and team managers, play a crucial role in guiding the drivers through the challenges of the season. The synergy between the driver and the team often defines the level of success achieved on the track.

Technical Advancements and Car Performance

Formula 3, like its higher-tier counterparts, relies heavily on technical advancements and the performance of the race cars. The 2024 season brings with it potential innovations and upgrades to the machinery, influencing the competitiveness of each team and driver. The ability to adapt quickly to new technical developments and extract optimal performance from the cars will be a key factor in the drivers’ success.

Understanding the nuances of aerodynamics, tire management, and race strategy becomes imperative in a series where margins are often razor-thin. The ability of a driver to collaborate effectively with the technical team in fine-tuning the car’s setup can make a significant difference in the highly competitive environment of Formula 3.

Consistency vs. Spectacular Performances

Formula 3 demands a delicate balance between consistency and spectacular performances. While podium finishes and race victories certainly garner attention, consistency in accumulating points across the season is equally vital for championship contention. Drivers need to navigate the fine line between calculated risk-taking and minimizing errors that could prove costly in the championship standings.

The ability to adapt to different circuits, varying weather conditions, and the unique challenges posed by each race weekend showcases the maturity of a driver. As these five drivers aim to leave an indelible mark in the 2024 season, their approach to balancing consistency with standout performances will be a storyline worth following. How drivers respond to unforeseen challenges, whether through strategic decisions or on-the-fly adjustments during races, can shape the outcome

of the championship. Additionally, the rising competition within Formula 3 adds another layer of complexity. The grid comprises talented young drivers from diverse backgrounds, each eager to make their mark. The ability to navigate through this competitive landscape and consistently outperform rivals is a testament to a driver’s skill and resilience.

Formula 3 provides a platform for drivers to showcase their skills in front of team scouts and Formula 1 team principals who are constantly on the lookout for the next generation of racing superstars. A standout season in Formula 3 can open doors to test opportunities, reserve driver roles, and, ultimately, a seat in a Formula 1 car.

Several Formula 3 graduates have successfully transitioned to Formula 1 in recent years, including Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and George Russell, among others. The success stories of these drivers serve as inspiration for the current crop, fueling their aspirations to join the elite ranks of Formula 1.

Development as Drivers and Personal Growth

Beyond the immediate goal of reaching Formula 1, the Formula 3 experience contributes significantly to the overall development of these drivers. The demanding race calendar, exposure to different tracks, and the intense competition foster a rapid learning curve. The ability to adapt to new environments, work closely with a professional team, and handle the pressures of a championship battle all contribute to the holistic development of these young athletes.
