Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reflected on the criticism Kimi Antonelli faced before his Formula 1 debut, as the Italian prepares for a chance to become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.
After a difficult first season, Antonelli has surprised the paddock with his results in 2026, leaving Wolff pleased with the decision to promote him to Mercedes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wolff snapped back at critics who questioned Antonelli’s place in F1 and said he was “extremely satisfied” with the driver’s progress.
“People in other teams that said, he shouldn’t even be in Formula 1, the tears in Spa, in parc ferme. And all of that now is extremely satisfying to see what he’s able to deliver, how he’s working with the team, with Bono [Antonelli’s engineer Peter Bonnington] and yielding the results,” Wolff said.
Toto Wolff Recalls the Doubts Around Kimi Antonelli
Mercedes promoted Antonelli to its senior team in 2025 when he was only 18. The decision attracted attention because he replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who left for Ferrari. Although the Italian had shown promise in junior racing, he had little experience of F1’s demands.

His first season included several difficult weekends, but the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix stood out. Antonelli qualified 18th after an early exit in Q1 and struggled to hide his emotions in the paddock. The result came during a period when he had gone nine races without scoring a point.
Wolff admitted that some people believed Mercedes had promoted Antonelli too soon. However, he stood by the decision and gave the young driver time to adjust. Rather than judge him solely on his first season, the Mercedes boss wanted to see how he responded in his second year.
That patience has paid off. Antonelli has won nine races in 2026, is ahead of his teammate George Russell in points tally and is poised to win the championship at the upcoming Mexican GP. The contrast with his rookie campaign explains why Wolff now looks back at the earlier criticism with satisfaction.

Why Kimi Antonelli Has Improved in 2026
Wolff admitted that he could not fully explain Antonelli’s transformation over the winter. However, he believes the new technical regulations for 2026 may have helped.
The previous cars had been in use for several seasons, giving experienced drivers an advantage over rookies. With the new rules, however, every driver had to adapt to a different generation of cars.
The Mercedes boss also praised Antonelli’s attitude. Before the United States Grand Prix in Austin, the young driver told Wolff that he wanted to enjoy the weekend rather than focus on the slim probability of winning the championship there. Wolff encouraged him to keep that mindset and remember to enjoy his job.

That approach has helped Antonelli handle the pressure of a title fight at such a young age. He arrives at the Mexico City Grand Prix with 365 points and a 123-point lead over Russell. Two points on Sunday, November 1, are likely to be enough to secure the championship.
If Antonelli achieves that goal, he will become the youngest F1 world champion at 20. For Wolff, the outcome would reward the team’s faith in a young driver who faced serious doubts before his debut and has since delivered results few expected so soon.
