A chaotic 2026 Mexican GP saw several changes to its final leaderboard after multiple post-race penalties reshaped the result. After the race, the FIA handed out penalties to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and both Alpine drivers for their on-track incidents.

Max Verstappen took the victory at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez ahead of pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli.

The first post-race penalty came out against Piastri, who saw 10 seconds added to his race time for causing a collision with rookie Arvid Lindblad. The incident occurred during a battle for position on Lap 58 at Turn 2, where Piastri attempted to overtake the Racing Bulls driver, but it turned into a wreck and ended the British driver’s race early.

The penalty dropped the Australian from seventh to 16th (later adjusted to P13), leaving him without any championship points.

The Alpine Formula 1 team suffered even bigger penalties following the FIA’s separate investigations into yellow-flag infringements. A solid double-points day turned into a disappointing weekend for the team.

Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly had crossed the finish line in P8 and P10, respectively. However, both drivers were subsequently summoned to the stewards for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags. As a result, Colapinto dropped from eighth to 15th, while Gasly fell from 10th to 17th.

Their penalties turned out to be a gain for several drivers. It moved Liam Lawson into seventh, Gabriel Bortoleto into eighth, Isack Hadjar into ninth, and debutant Ryo Hirakawa also got promoted to 10th, securing a single point on his Formula 1 debut.
