‘Little More Worried About My Race Than Kimi’s’: Marco Antonelli on Brink of Winning His Own Title Before Son

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli’s father, Marco, has said that he is more worried about his own team, AKM Motorsport, winning the Italian GP Endurance Championship on Sunday than his son’s F1 triumph. Marco has noted that this weekend in Mugello is an important moment for his motorsport team as well.

“It’s an important weekend. We’re leading the overall standings, we want to win. We have a 14-point lead,” Marco told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We’re here preparing everything; I came to lend a hand to the team. It’s an important event, and it’s still my team.

“I’m a little more worried about my race than Kimi’s. Everyone’s looking at their own house, so now I’m looking at my own house, at my team. I’d really like to win this championship,” he added.

Kimi can, and most likely will, become the youngest world champion in the history of F1 at this Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix, as he simply needs to finish inside the top nine to do so. Even if he somehow doesn’t, one of George Russell or Lewis Hamilton needs to win the race to take the fight to Brazil the week after.

Marco will be in Mexico City on Sunday to witness his son potentially making history, but with one eye on his own team in Mugello, Italy. Guy Albag and Lorenzo Ferrari will be driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for his team and looking to claim the title as they go into the race with a 14-point lead at the top of the standings.

Marco Antonelli says Kimi Antonelli ‘Can Look After Himself’

Marco has also stated that his son Kimi can now ‘look after himself’ amid his absence from the Mexican Grand Prix so far this weekend. The 62-year-old said that he has ‘done enough’ in Kimi’s journey, as he looks after his own team in Mugello this weekend before flying to Mexico for Sunday’s race.

“At this stage, Kimi can look after himself. I’ve already done enough. I have to think about my team, too. Just as he wants to win, I’m certainly not content with just taking part,” said Marco.

Marco was most recently present at last weekend’s US Grand Prix as Kimi secured his ninth win of the 2026 F1 season.

Kimi Antonelli Steady During Practice as he Closes in on Maiden F1 Title in Mexico

Antonelli managed to finish second quickest during FP1 at the Mexican Grand Prix on Friday, after returning from illness due to which he missed media duties on Thursday. The Italian driver was over six-tenths of a second behind Charles Leclerc in a session littered with rookie drivers.

For FP2, Antonelli finished fourth, but was only two-tenths of a second behind Leclerc, who led the session again. In the final practice session on Saturday, the Mercedes driver ended the session in second again, this time just one millisecond behind McLaren’s Lando Norris.

This made for good enough preparation for Antonelli, as the 20-year-old does not need a particularly special result in Mexico to secure his maiden F1 title. A minimum of two points, irrespective of other results, will make him the youngest world champion in the history of F1, beating Sebastian Vettel’s 16-year-old record.
