A matter of fact is that George Russell won the last Formula 1 Grand Prix or as one might say, the most recent Formula 1 Grand Prix. Interestingly, George Russell won that race from pole position. To ask fans or those who’d have followed the event as to what particular race that was would be asking something as easy or childish as do Electric cars work on petrol or diesel.
We saw it. We loved it. And, the Mercedes fans, in particular, would have quite simply adored the recent 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix- isn’t it?
But today is a new day. George Russell has another great chance of winning a brand new Formula 1 Grand Prix. The last time he won a race, he began on pole. Something he had earned with pure effort. On this particular occasion, George Russell has inherited the top slot on the grid from the original Qatar Grand Prix pole sitter, Max Verstappen.
And while it would be dabbling with needless philosophy to suggest something like the only person standing in the way of George Russell and a victory at Qatar is George Russell himself, for we are often our own limitation (as also strength), it’s important to reflect on the fact that Verstappen would be equally keen.
The 2024 World champion would be just as hungry to win at Qatar’s Lusail International track as George Russell himself; the youngster begins a second consecutive race from first on the grid. But the big question is- can he win a consecutive Formula 1 Grand prix for the first time in his career?
And in so doing, can he set the precedent for Mercedes dominating the charts yet again? Remember the Woking-based outfit are nowhere near the top three on the Constructor’s Standings this year with McLaren and Ferrari fighting head-to-head for the second-best honours on the charts behind McLaren (currently 623 points).
What can happen with George Russell at Qatar F1 race?
However, knowing his penchant to dominate the proceedings, George Russell, who it must be reiterated, has a great chance at winning a fourth career Grand Prix, proved earlier in qualifying as to why he’s highly rated.
Not only is the man from King’s Lynn currently driving like one, he is someone who set the bar high quite early in his F1 career when thanks to sheer desire to succeed and that resoluteness, he’d earn the title for being “Mr. Saturday” with Williams.
Despite being paired with a car that would find it quite difficult to score points regularly, let alone fight for podiums, George Russell was often seen driving the wheels of his Williams F43B (powered by Mercedes). While he garnered 16 points for Williams back in 2022, a year of note and repute for the youngster given strong finishes at Hungary, Belgium, Italy and Russia, it would be his Mercedes stint that would present the world with his appetite for a good battle.
And here we are. We see an able and focused young driver who is just 26 years of age but with great wins like Austria and Las Vegas under his belt. He would like to come good in the next two hours as the red lights go green also because an F1 driver always likes to mark the season end on a high.
But can that happen? Will that happen? How far will Max Verstappen go- and will he-actually go to curb what could be George Russell mania at Qatar? And moreover, will these be the only talking points at the Qatar Grand Prix or will we see any of the two McLaren drivers or maybe both playing their own unique part in defining the 57-lap contest.
There’s so much to watch out for.
