George Russell Points To Optimism On Mercedes Engineers
One of the most interesting periods of time in the life of Formula 1, especially from the point of view of Mercedes was when the famed Silver Arrows camp won successive world championships from the period of 2014 until 2021. This was the time where both Nico Rosberg as well as Sir Lewis Hamilton bagged brilliant world titles; the former German-Finn driver clinching his only world title during this time.
But having said that, what was rather interesting is what it was during this period, one dubbed the ‘reign of Mercedes’ that the Toto Wolff-led team successfully outsmarted the legend called Adrian Newey, who despite deploying his unbelievable talent and redoubtable engineering excellence wasn’t able to help Red Bull earn even a single title during this time.
However, that period of time marked by distinct Mercedes mauling of the others on the grid now seems to belong to the past for Red Bull have clearly emerged as the team to beat in the current firmament of Formula 1.
But with Adrian Newey confirmed to leave Red Bull towards the end of the current world championship, talks have grown only louder, and ditto for guesswork, about where might the Englishman land post 2025. Amid these times marked by sufficient speculation with regard to the engineering don’s imminent future, there is a certain faction of fans who truly believe that Newey may go to Mercedes.
However, should Adrian Newey not reach Mercedes, George Russell, who happens to be the team’s long-term future (with Hamilton Ferrari-bound for 2025), has asserted faith on his Mercedes team’s engineers alluding to the fact that they are brilliant and talented.
Here’s what he happened to share with a leading publication on the said matter:
“You want to have the best engineers, the best drivers, the best mechanics, you want to have the best individuals [as] part of your team. But I think the team we have here, over the course of the last 12 years, the group of engineers that sit in the room next door are still the most successful engineers that Formula 1 has seen in the last 12 [or] 13 years.”
George Russell poses faith on his Mercedes engineers
“Now we’re going through a period where we’re not achieving the success that the team once achieved a few years ago. But I have every faith in everybody, the people that won the championships, the new engineers and individuals who are part of this journey, to bring Mercedes back to the top,” is what was Russell’s view.
That being said, it is also quite clear that till the time Adrian Newey’s next F1 team isn’t announced for the record, the rumours and grapevine shall persistently grow and create much noise. But where could he go- will it be Mercedes or the Maranello-based outfit called Scuderia Ferrari?
