Cadillac Shares Major Update on Its General Motors Engine Factory Timeline
Cadillac has confirmed a major milestone in its F1 project, announcing that the dedicated General Motors engine factory will officially open on December 18, 2026. The facility is part of GM’s long-term plan to develop its own power unit and transform Cadillac into a full works team by 2029. The factory base is in Charlotte, North Carolina.
General Motors president Mark Reuss confirmed the opening date during a conference at Autosport Business Exchange in New York. The opening will mark a significant step in the American manufacturer’s efforts to establish itself as a power unit supplier in the biggest motorsports series in the world.

“We’re opening our whole engine factory, if you will, in Charlotte, North Carolina on 18 December,” Reuss told Motorsports.com. “So that’s coming really well.”
GM President Outlines Cadillac’s Long-Term F1 Goal

General Motors made its F1 debut under the Cadillac brand in 2026. The team is using Ferrari engines while GM works on its own engine programme. They plan to continue with Ferrari engines until its in-house power unit is ready for the competition, with 2029 targeted for its introduction.
While Cadillac is still establishing itself in the sport, Reuss is determined to build a competitive operation capable of challenging established teams in the future. He acknowledged that developing a successful F1 team requires time, the right personnel, and a carefully planned approach.
“You know, we’re not here to finish last, so we’ve got to follow through and build this team, build the powertrain and build the car, like we did in GTP,” Reuss said.
“That takes a little more time here, because this is a place where we’ve never raced. You’ve got to get the right people with the right engineers and the right drivers, and we’ve got to get that process really going, and it’s logarithmic, it’s not linear.”
Reuss Thanks Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for Being Patient

Alongside Cadillac’s technical development off the track, the team is relying on the experience of veteran drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as it navigates its first season in F1. Both the drivers have had an underwhelming season as Cadillac works to become more competitive.
“Both of these gentlemen in the race for us do that, and they really understand what it takes and the process,” Reuss noted.
“I’m very, very happy that they’re patient with us, to be honest; that takes a special person.”

Cadillac has faced a challenging maiden F1 season and has yet to earn its first point in 2026, with six rounds left in the season.
